New forum dedicated to truckputers

I have an 01 superduty and in the process of designing, installing and debugging my truckputer, I noticed the information is spread all over the place. Would it be possible to have a new forum open for trucks? This would be full size trucks since the requirements are different than cars. Space is at a premium and these vehicles are often used for towing and hauling. Although I like the glitz and glamour of a lot of these systems, I noticed a few of us building 'functional' systems that don't have all of the frills.

The concepts for a PC in your vehicle are pretty much the same whether it's a sports car or a lowrider or a small pickup (like mine) or a semi or a tractor or a snowmobile or a boat.

I don't know what you consider "frills".
Is satellite navigation a frill? How about stereo integration? Perhaps CD playback? Rear-view camera?
Perhaps lighting and the additional stereo components, I suppose.
Using a controller to activate actuators and such would constitute "frills" in my mind.

You think space is at a premium in a full-size truck? Try installing in a sport compact.

Well, cars usually have trunks or a hatch area that can be modified to house the computing hardware. Pickup trucks usually don't have these hiding places. In my case, the computer is distributed throuout the cab using the center console and under seat areas. I agree that the concept is pretty much the same no matter what vehicle is used, but I thought it would be a nice addition to the forums.

As for frills: I guess that is a point of view.

I'm sorry - but we cannot create a new subforum for every different type of vehicle out there.

Some would want a sports car forum, others would want then a sports compact truck forum...since, well, they are even more limited in space than a full size truck...and I'm not sure why the fact that you use the truck to tow would make it any different from others on here who use their vehicles on a daily basis to do whatever it is that they do.

I'm sorry, I just cannot justify it. Thanks for asking though.

I don't know of a truck out there that wouldn't be easier to do an install in over a sport compact. Even in regular cabs. Trucks, and especially domestic (to the US) trucks leave loads of space under the seats, and the MoBo's keep getting smaller, so it's working in your advantage.

The only tip of advice I could offer would be to check out forums dedicated to your make/model, and see where they're stuffing subs. If a sub will fit, chances are you can get many if not most of the PC components in the same space. And I'm pretty sure there's an audio nut in the world for almost every make/model.

Maybe I shouldn't have included that there for that reason.

I think that there are some pretty unique issues witha boat computer, as well as functionality that a carPC isnt' going to need, such as ocean charting software or integrating a fish finder...

Now, if there could be something like a fish finder that could show you the cars on the road in a similar way so you could avoing the "schools of fish"...

I don't think it's necessary.. Both of my installs have been done on trucks.. There really is nothing different than a car. Some cars have perfect spots for installs, some do not.. Same goes for trucks. The process and electronics is all the same.
