I've read some threads where users had issues getting the hd radio module to work while using a usb dac....As someone that got in on the hippo group buy here some time ago I had to come up with a solution to keeping the DAC as the main output device. What I did was use audiorepeater, (a sub applet of Virtual Audio Cable) and the line in on my motherboard. Audiorepeater supports command line batch entry to the point where routing the line in of the motherboard to the dac is working perfectly 'behind the scenes' I have it setup to run the batch file off my skin's radio button in roadrunner. Switching to any other media source kills the audiorepeater executable making for completely seemless integration. If anyone needs help getting it setup, post up or PM me. Thanks again Mitch for your continued work on this as well as RR!

Anyone here ever have any problems using the cheap USB to SERIAL dongles on fleabay? I just bought a DMHD1000 and I'm about to buy the cable but don't want to spend the $25 for the FTDI cables if the cheapo ones work OK.

Thanks!

you're probably best off just paying the 25 for the FTDI when you know it works rather than $10 for one that doesn't and another $25 for the one you knew worked in the first place. 25<35

just a thought.

If people post and say they have problems with them, then yea.. But there is a big difference between $3 and $25 when you are on a tight budget..

Now, if I just had to get that cable, then yea, no problem.. But $55 for the DMHD1000, $25 for the serial cable and then the cost of the USB to Serial adds up..

Your Mobo doesnt have more then one serial port? There has to be some headers on it?

Just remember this.... when you budget your carpc, you have to leave leeway money, because if I still payed attention to my original budget, lol, I don't think id have an install going. Because this has become a hardcore hobby for me, I turn a blind eye to the budget. I heard of people using the cheapy cable and frying the HD unit. Mitch's cable has a special chip inside of it that properly does what its supposed to do.

PS: Is it me Mitch, or is everyone trying to be cheap on your products?

No, it just has one serial port and no headers.. This is for my truck, not my wife's car, so I'm just adding on to an already completed install.. But, when I just spent over $750 building hers (and still have another $250 minimum to finish) I want to save money anywhere I can..

I'm not trying to be "cheap" I'm trying to spend the least amount of money possible to have a working solution..

If Mitch says to not go the cheap route, then I won't.. That is why I asked.. If 100 people posted and said "Yea, I got the $3 cable and have had zero issues." and no one said they had issues then it would be stupid to spend $25..

I think I'll hook Mitch's cable to my serial port and use the cheapo USB to SERIAL adapter for my serial IR receiver (to use with Girder).

good god, have mercy. I spent the last two hours or so reading up on all 1165+ posts on this thread to understand how to set up my HD Radio unit properly (so I don't have to do trial and error).

Mitch, I have a suggestion: update your first post with all relevant information about your cable and the HD radio tuners. You have to repeat yourself every other time (which could've saved you, me and everyone else time because everybody's so lazy to read up 2+ years worth of old posts )

A lot of common topics (excluding RR, since I'm using CF) that I came across as important are: power wiring, grounding mod, glass antenna, RFI/EMI, USB-Serial cable, line-in vs mic-in, hibernation, com ports, etc.

but lesson learned: don't mess with the mitch

keep up the awesome work!

My radio just stopped working out of the blue.. It was working great for about 2 days and then, nothing..

I downloaded your HDRadio program and I'm trying it now.. It doesn't find anything when it does an auto search but when I tell it my comport and click on retry I hear the HD radio click on but then click right back off and then it says radio not found..

Any ideas?

Thanks

Another PC isn't really possible as the cable is ran under the carpet and would be a total PITA to get the cable out..

I did try the LCD and while I didn't have sound (guessing because of the way it's hooked up) I was able to scan stations on it and it was showing station / song info correctly.
