wow - this could be really cool if there is some smart software developer out there.....

Then in states like cali where radar det. are illegal you could turn it on sillent and hide it permanently....

I thought that thread I started a long time ago was going to start some interest. I thought more people would get involved. Funny that it started in a whole different forum! zPilot I thought you were going to be the first to offer this! I am going to build that cable on fri and see how it works. This is tight!

Radar dectectors aren't illegal in California (only Virginia and Washington DC), but if you get stopped by CHP and they see one, you'll be guaranteed a ticket for anything or nothing at all.

Well, I built the cable/interface last night (probably too late last night..) and it seems I may have done something wrong, as I can't seem to get any data displaying through Software One. It detects the port, and it also notices when I unplug the cable from the accessory port (gives a Not Connected message) so I know at the very least it is picking up the device and the port. The display on my V1 goes blank, as it should when the concealed display is connected (or in my case, the 4k resistor loop is in place), but there doesn't appear to be any data getting to the port.

I also had issue with Software One conflicting with MapMonkey/GPS, saying COM1 was already opened. I had to shut down MapMonkey in order for that message to go away, even though my Rikaline is on COM4 (USB-to-serial).

So I guess I'll have to take it apart and test the connections again. I'm sure when components are assembled at 2am, they tend to get placed wrong.

And yes, it was indeed a 9-pin female D-sub. The schematic assumes you're wiring directly to the male (motherboard) connector.

Neat little enclosure - where did you get it and a suitably sized bread board?

Stupid me forgot to get the 1N4148 Diode. I have plenty of PNP Transistors though. Which smart person here remembers how to use a Transistor as a diode?

At the RatShack. They have a project box that comes with a perf board. I just did some dremel hacking to fit the DB-9. BTW, the Shack doesn't carry the 90 degree female (or male) DB-9 connectors. I procured mine from Frys.

http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...t%5Fid=270-283

On their site they list some project boxes that have cutouts for DB9 and DB25, so one of those might be handy also. They seemed larger than I needed though.

http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...%5Fid=270-1802

I really wish they carried 90 degree female RJ-11 ports so I could've made it 100% modular. I suppose I could always tear apart an old modem or something...

I built mine also today. After the initial startup, the display goes blank on the V1, but the software one doesn't show anything. When I hit connect, it doesn't say Error: Not connected like when there is nothing connected. I also tried changing modes but nothing seemed to work.

I guess I will triple check my wiring.

Anyone else?

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't get it working on the first try

I tried to find more info on the radar Yahoo Group... unfortunately it's a moderated group, so my membership is still in limbo.

I took the liberty of contacting Jim Mitchell producer of "Software One". Hopefully he will join us to help us troubleshoot our interface issues.

I wonder if he'll make the source available - then we could really integrate it into one of the front ends. Nice full UI on a dedicated skin and then automatic switches to that skin when something gets detected! That would rock.
