Well Google earth is not meant to give directions in real time. and Also you will need a live internet connection to do that. You can get directions to somewhere but you don't really need Goops for all that. Goops is useful if you need to get your location basically. For navigation I personally would use some program that is built for that. For more info on Goops please read all the tread. Also there are two very similar programs around here and you can find a lot of info about these things you are asking. Check this thread out http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/gps/63630-google-earth-gps-tracking-solution.html

GooPs V1.7.1 Released - Record/Play, bug fixes, enhancements
I need to cancel this release. It seems to crash on some systems. Sorry for the inconvenience.
-Dave
1.7.2 – 3/19/06
Added Record/Play capability
Record – records the “local” vehicle nmea data. Data is stored in the file “Play.<name>” where <name> is your local vehicle name. Deletes any previously recorded data.
Play – plays back the last recorded data in Google Earth as vehicle “Play.<name>”
Stop – stops Play or Record
Demo mode vehicle tracks can now be customized with your own nmea data.Copy files containing nmea sentences (you can use the files produced by the Record function) to the directory from which GooPs is running. Files must be named <name>.nme where <name> is the name of the demo vehicle (e.g. Me.nme) “Autostart Google Earth” now starts Google Earth on program startup.
Fixed problem with “retry/switch to” dialog appearing when GooPs starts Google Earth.
Improved nmea sentence error handling. Sentences with invalid data are no longer discarded.

Your right. I only tested it on my laptop and it works fine - it crashes on my desktop. Sorry.

Request: I don't think the auto-start Google Earth will work as good with SKINbedder this way. I liked how it would not start until after I clicked "Start Demo" for testing at least. If auto-connect to GPS is enabled then you want it to start right away, but if it is not all setup to work right away, it is great to be able to change the settings through your program before embedding GE on top of it. That is why I say you start GE after you are actively updating the network link (either from live GPS data or from a demo).

I had goops working with GE at one point but now GE is displaying the incorrect position - the location where the gps unit was last plugged in. I have plugged the gps mouse in again but it hasnt updated to my current location. I tried deleteing all files, ge network links etc, but it still goes back to the old position. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry you're having trouble NoTickets,
Here are a few things to check: The status bar at the bottom of the main window should be displaying "GPS:Receiving Data".
Make sure the COM port and rate are set correctly in the options dialog and the GPS.
The GPS should be set to output nmea.
"Demo Mode" should not be checked in the options dialog
"Play" should not be depressed in the options dialog.
"Pause/Continue" on main window should read "Pause".
Select "AutoConnect" in the options dialog (or press the "Connect" button). It could also be a network or resource problem. Have you tried rebooting?
If you are using version 1.7.3, you can try a previous version (you can find 1.7.1 on the GooPs download site) to make sure I didn't break something.
Please let me know if you need more help.
Thanks,
-Dave

Dave,
Thanks for the quick reply. I checked all of the things you listed, no luck.
Trying version 1.6 GE gives an error saying it could not open the kml file for reading.
Version 1.7.1 acts just like 1.7.3
I have rebooted. Anyway I can wipe out all of the goops settings and start over?

Does demo mode work?
Delete the GooPs registry entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
Go to the directory from which GooPs is running and delete the file GooPs.trk.
Hook up your GPS and press the GooPs Options->Record button. It should create a file called Me.Play.nme. The file should contain nmea sentences from your GPS.
Make sure you don't have an old GooPsServers network link in My Places in Google Earth.
You can also try editing the GooPsServers network link in Google Earth. Replace the string "localhost" with "127.0.0.1" (e.g. http://127.0.0.1:51233/GooPsServers)
Let me know what happens,
-Dave

David I got some very interesting results today! I had time to test... Version 1.7.3 does work with my Ublox DR GPS but with e very funny but important bug! most of the time, but not always, it does not change the direction of the arrow. I turn and my track follows me just fine but the arrow does not turn and of course GE does not rotate. I also found out that when this happens versions 1.7 and 1.7.1 stopped tracking me completely (the problem mentioned in previous posts and supposedly resolved with 1.7.3).
The most interesting part is that version 1.5 and 1.6 work fine!!!! Problems start at 1.7 . I will attach a small log that most of it has this problem just replay it with your versions and you'll see what i mean.
By the way these are not complaints just trying to work with you to improve the program. I and all of us here i assume really appreciate all the work and effort that you put in this! I thanks you so much for being so patient with me!
The log.

Thanks spaceskater,
I really appreciate your feedback. I think I see the problem, I believe I am interpreting the GPRMC course info incorrectly. It looks like I had it right in 1.5 and 1.6 but for some reason I changed/broke it in 1.7.
So hopefully when I put the old code back it will fix your problem. Sorry for the confusion.

Ooops, that was a red herring. I've found that if I take the negative heading values I get in your GPRMC or GPVTG sentences and add 360 it gives the correct heading. I'm not sure how you got it to work w/ 1.5/1.6, maybe just a coincidence? I'll see if I can dig up an nmea spec to find what this really means. In the meantime I'll post a new version with this fix probably tomorrow.
Thanks again!
