Awesome. I tried out Beta 4.0 yesterday as well. Too bad they don't have pre-loaded textured buildings... you have to download the KML on a per building basis. I can't wait till they have all of downtown LA textured!

I've moved and had lots of other work, but I haven't given up on the Sb skin. My next version will have buttons that switch views by changing the .cfg file while in-use. It will be awesome!

Hey David, you still around and programming?

I'm not sure if you are up to this, but I realized today the best way to use GooPs as a nav system... don't .

iG3 + GooPs together would work perfect if we could only integrate them together. The top-view in iG3 sucks! It places your car on the bottom of the screen so if you have any turns you have to zoom out a ton to see the full path. Sometimes you can change from heading to north, but it's still no zoomed out Google Earth. Conversly, GE sucks when zoomed in as you don't get the "hybrid-view" road overlays.

I just always use iG3 in 3D/Heading view to show me turns and announce turn-by-turn directions. I'd rather use Google Earth if I want to look at a map should I decide to stray from my route a bit. iG3 will recalculate and keep giving me it's directions as I modify its path my driving an alternate route with GooPs map as my guide.

...so here is the software request: Make it so whenever I choose a destination in iG3, GooPs automatically routes it's own driving directions from the current GPS location to iG3's destination. This way I have the route highlight in both programs, an awesome map with traffic conditions overlayed in GooPs, and turn-by-turn directions from iG3.

If you would like to be on-board but do not know how to get a route from iG3, maybe I could do that part and you could just make it so when GooPs receives a window message with co-ordinates (or an address) from my app, it automatically routes directions from the current location to those co-ordinates in Google Earth.

Possible?

I almost have a new skin done for GooPs, but I have been having a lot of problems trying to use it with the new GE4 Beta2. The icons do not work, I get the default placemark icon instead.

Are you working on an update?

Dumb question.. I just found put about this and it's a great idea.... But I still do not understand the way to "make it work". I was able to run and saw "me" with some other guys at Oregon, but what I do not get is how to setup up your pc to make it work. Now, I do have the GPS receiver in the car but I do not have internet access in my car. So how exactly does it track it? via the GPS receiver? I mean, how do I setup my carpc to the GooPs to make it work? I re-read many times the first threads and I just could not make it work. Thanks

Israel

Click the [Options...] button in GooPs. Then turn off Demo mode and select the COM port for your GPS. After that it will follow your GPS instead of "Me*" and those other guys in the demo.

As for internet, it will work without it, but it will just all be gray instead of images. You kinda need internet in the car for it to really work. Google Earth does allow up to a 2GB cache (or more if you reg-hack it), so some people have built up the cache by flying around the places they drive on their home computer, and then just transfer the cache file to the CarPC.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get internet in your car for $20/mo or less (search the forum).

Remote Tracking

So guys ... IS there a solution for how to track others via internet.

I saw the solutiuon of FindMe FindU and it is basedon submitting the info to a server where u can track. The server will also generate a KML file allowing tracking via EG as well.

Is here a similar solution found?

P.S. GPSGate (Franson) add also a plug in for EG ... is working but all users need
GPSgate to use the tcp/ip gate ....

What?

GooPs only tracks if you are on a LAN (have a static IP).
Try GPS Secure and/or WhereIsMyGPS (both have their own sub-forum in the "support software" section).

EDIT: Is FindU just for amature radio? No GPS/Internet support?
Also, you may want to look at mologogo.

Take a look at this one to see what I meant by FindU.

For more info:

Anybody can track me or those who are in the list.
I have a tiny program installed in ppc sending coordinate to the server.
also a link to kml file is provided.

I like to have the combi of GooPs and FindMe where real-time tracking with EG.

I know that GooPs allow only those who are visisble in the network .. my question was more: how to?

Thanks

For the native GooPs remote tracking, the vehicle you are tracking needs to be "visible" to you on the network. That means it needs to be setup with a static IP address. I believe verizon mobile broadband will give you a static IP (for a fee). I also believe there are mobile VPN solutions available.

This fall I will hopefully release a remote tracking solution that will not require a static IP or VPN (but will require a static server of some sort).

The latest version of Google earth created an new bug for me... In every position update the camera zooms out just a little bit, about 50 feet. This happens with auto zoom deactivated of course. if i activate autozoom then it keeps the predefined height. Auto rotate and tilt don't affect it. I cant figure it out... and it started with the last version of google earth (beta 4.0.1693). I had a previous version of beta 4 and had no problem.

Has anyone noticed the same problem??

I noticed the problem. It's some kind of bug with the Google Earth beta. I reported it on the GE forum, hopefully it gets resolved.

GE Crash

GooPs crashes my Google Earth every time I try to use it. I start GooPs, click start demo, it loads up GE and then GE exits out and GooPs is frozen. It even happens when I start GE first. I have GE version 4.0.2091 (beta).
