Hello there folks,
I have a relatively simple question. Will I be able to play back data recorded with software other than GooPs itself? I have a bunch of GPS track data which I would like to animate and make movies of, using Google Earth and fraps, and GooPs looks like a prime candidate. The AutoView and 3D model cursors sound specially interesting.
A demo version of GooPs Pro would be nice, although I'll bite the bullet for 15 bucks if you guys tell me it'll do what I'd like it to.
Thanks!

Hi,
GooPs can play back any log of NMEA sentences. You will need to convert your GPS data to NMEA using something like gpsbabel (free).
You can use the free version of GooPs. Name the NMEA log file with the name of one of the demo vehicles (something like "cin.nme"). Place the file in the same directory you are running GooPs from. Start the demo mode, and your data will be played for the "Cin" vehicle.
You can adjust the speed of the playback with the demo/playback speed slider. You should be able to use the Pro features like 3D model cursors, speedtrack, and autoview in demo mode with GooPs Free.

GooPS basic question
Hi there,
I just downloaded the free version of GooPS and am trying to make it work with my Magellan Explorist 500 GPS. I have the GPS set to NMEA V2.1 GSA, reporting data through a com4 port.
GooPS seems to have difficulting communicating with the GPS. It gives the message "COM4:Opened" most of the time. Occasionally it says "Acquiring Signal" and only a couple of times, for a few seconds, has it actually acquired a signal and plotted my location in Google Earth.
I am sure that the GPS is outputing NMEA data once a second because I can check that with HyperTerminal, but GooPS is most of the time not able to get the data it would seem.
Any thoughts for me?
Thanks much!

Hi MET,
Sorry you're having problems. Would you be able to send a log of your NMEA data to mygoops@gmail.com?

problem to show my NMEA-data
Hello,
I want to track my NMEA-data cin.nme (attachement ist the same file as .txt) but it doesn't work. All demos are ok, I can see them in GE.
The cin.nme is in the same directory as GooPsFree2_2.exe.
If I click on "start demo", GE starts and shows all the "demo-tracks". It shows me the cin-demo, not my NMEA-data.
Is the NMEA-data wrong? What can I do?
Best regards,
Jan

Hey Jan,
Sorry you're having problems.
I was able to show your data fine with GooPsFree2_2.exe as the cin demo by naming the file "cin.nme" and placing it in the same directory/folder from which GooPs is running.
Your data is missing speed and heading info so the track won't show correctly unless you turn Track Compression off for the Cin vehicle (in the GooPs Options dialog).
Make sure that GooPs is actually running from the same directory/folder as cin.nme. Stop and restart GooPs to make sure your file gets loaded (you'll have to disable track compression for the Cin vehicle each time you start demo mode).
Make sure you have read permission on cin.nme. You can also try it with any of the other demo vehicle names (including "Me(demo).nme")

Thank you for your help.
Now it works, I don't know why :-)
But I have another question.
E.g. at the me(demo) the "driven" way is shown in a line with kurve,straights,.. . I can see that it follows a street.
But when I look at my way, there is only a line from the starting-position to the actually position. It is always a straight.
What can I do?

Jan,
You need to turn off track compression for "Me(demo)" in the Options dialog. It is a checkbox labeled "Compress" in the "Track" area in the lower middle portion of the Options dialog. You'll have to do this every time you run GooPs.

correct NMEA-data
Hey David,
thank you very much for your help.
I have another question.
I want to send NMEA-strings via TCP/IP or com-port to goops.
My NMEA-strings are like this:
Quote:

The checksum is always 0, is it ok with GooPsPro2_3Beta.exe?
Is something wrong with the string?
Does goops need more information? The $GPRMC....?
Thanks a lot,
Jan

Jan,
The timestamp in your sentences needs to increment by at least one second per update. You may also want to turn off track compression for that vehicle. Here are the instructions for interfacing your app with GooPs: http://goopstechnologies.com/faq.htm...application_to

I sent every second one NMEA-string to COM1 (COM1 ist connected with COM2). I chose COM2 at the Goops-Options (Rate: 4800 and Flow Ctl: none, the same in my prog), disabled "demo mode", clicked on "Connect" and Google Earth started. Goops showed "COM2: Connected".
But I couldn't see my position in GE, the cursor was always at langitude = 0 and longitude 0.
After that, I looked with HyperTerminal at COM2. In rs232.TXT are the strings which have been received at COM2. Behind every string is a space. Then comes the next string...
What is wrong? Do you know it?
I hope you understand my problem. My english is not very good...
Best regards,
Jan

Jan,
You're checksum needs to be "*0" instead of ",0". You also need CR/LFs between the sentences.

I just this entire thread today. It looks like a great program.
I would love to use google earth as a navigator though. Is there any way to map out a route and have google earth tell me when to turn?
