Yes, it is possible to use Google Earth to give you driving directions but you have to be connected to the internet for the initial inquiry.
I believe after that you can disconnect though.

For turn by turn directions I think you would need something like iguidance.

Nice one... I've signed up for a gpsgate buddy account and was just wondering if the goops client can cache my track and upload it to their server when I get a connection!
I don't have a constant connection but My WiFi card connects to any unprotected Wlan it can find and it would be great if it just saved my track when not connected and then uploaded it whenever I came close to one!
Read that the latest GPSgate client had support for this but I don't want to spend some additional cash on it before I have a chance to try it out!

GooPs currently won't cache to gpsgate, but that's a great idea now that gpsgate supports tracks.

I tried Goops free first, and noticed it did not capture time stamps. So I purchased Pro which supposedly does, but when I open my KML file in Google Earth, it only shows the track... I thought with Pro, you could view the path/track, as well as specific time at which each data point was captured? I only see the time of the ending point -- strange. Also, I see no way to 'play' these KML files so I can see an animation of the trip.
Any help appreciated, as I cannot find a manual for this thing!

Well, seems I have figured it out... kind of... I checked SpeedTrack and TimeStamp options in the configuration screen, and now when I open the KML file in GE , I can see those in the hierarchy/tree.
Keep in mind that I am not using Goops 'live'. I am simply having it upload the file via FTP to me server, and then I have a GE network location (pointing to my FTP server), so I can view the data at home after I arrive.
I have 3 problems:
1) The time attached to each speedtrack entry (in the tree) is not correct. It was off by about 5 1/2 hours. No idea why?! Same thing for the TimeStamps on the map.
2) I drove about 9 mins around my neighborhood, and it only captured 2 TimeStamps as far as I can tell. They are both located at my garage. This is the only point where I get a wifi connection on the route I did. It uploaded the file via FTP at that point (apparently right after I left, and right after I arrived back). Does this mean that the TimeStamps are only logged during a successful FTP connection? Doesn't make much sense to me, but hey... who knows.
3) Lastly, is there a way to 'play' this KML file in a way that I can see the animation in the same way those nifty demo 'cars' play?
Sorry about all the questions. For the life of me I could not find a User Manual after I purchased GooPs. If I can get these things resolved I am in heaven.

Hey Justintime,
The timestamp interval is currently fixed at 5 minutes so you should get one every five minutes. What you are seeing is correct.
Make sure your timezone is set correctly on your computer. It should give you the correct time for whatever your time zone is set to.
To play back your trip like the demo cars, press the "Record" button in the options dialog. This will record the nmea data from your gps to a file. To play it back press "Play". If you want to keep the nmea log you will need to rename the file Play@Me.nme to something else. You can play it back by renaming it back to Play@Me.nme and pressing the play button or name it with the same name as one of the demo vehicles (e.g. "cin.nme") and it will play back in demo mode.

I think you need to check your code. Today I tested, and it appears the time stamp is only captured to FTP whenever there is a successful FTP connection. Basically, my file is showing timestamps ONLY where there was an wifi spot (and therefore, wherever it managed to upload the file via FTP).
Im pretty sure about this! I have time stamps anywhere from 7 seconds apart, all the way to 15 mins apart...!

Hey Justintime,
I'm not able to reproduce that with my current code. The timestamps are generated the same way regardless of whether there is a successfull FTP connection or not. If you are looking at the timestamps in Google Earth, they can get overlayed if you are stationary, say for 15 minutes, so it would appear as though there are missing timestamps. To find out for certain look in the GooPsServers network link in the Google Earth places folder.
If that's not the case, if you send me the nmea data I can try to debug what is going on. Press the Record button, drive your route, and send the file Play@me.nme to mygoops@gmail.com.
You can also try the GooPs 2.3 Beta at http://goopstechnologies.com/beta/GooPsPro2_3Beta.exe

David: I see timestamps overlayed, but they are seconds apart! You have PM with my KML file.

Is there a known problem with hibernation, and Goops?
I have it open permanently, and using the FTP upload feature only. (No google earth tracking or any of that). Im using Xport3, which helps resume from hibernate (My GPS software, iGuidance 4, is picking up no problem after resume from hibernate).
However, Goops fails to track, or upload to FTP after resume from hibernate takes place. It keeps on saying FTP Failed in the status field... the only way to bring it back is to quit it and start up again.
Sadly, nothing gets tracked after resume from hibernate, and also no FTP takes place...
Anyone else?

I'm going for a 20 day - 8,000 km (= 5,000 miles) trip and I'm thinking about buying a full GPS, but Google Earth + GooPS + cheap GPS Receiver + notebook sounded like a way more cost-interesting solution.
With that in mind, I would like to clear up a few things:
- Will I be able to track myself while driving? I know I'll have to cache Google Earth first (to use it offline).
- Do I need Google Earth free or Plus?
- My intention is to set actual places, destinations and track my way to those places. Will I need GooPS free, Plus or Pro?
Ok, clearing that up is enough to make me decide between GPS or Google Earth + GooPS.
Anyway, thanks for the attention and sorry my poor English.

I'll have to check into that.

I wasn't able to reproduce that problem. I've had problems coming out of hibernation with a bluetooth connection to my GPS.
Which OS are you using?
If you can turn on debug logging (Options->Enable debug log), reproduce the problem, and send me the file "goopsDebug.log" ( mygoops@gmail.com) it may help me debug the problem.
