Goops using 60% CPU
Wow sweet program and wow, long thread. Hope this hasn't been asked here but couldn't possibly search through the whole thread for it...
When I run Goops I get about 75% CPU utilization. Not that great to be running continually as I'm driving along. Without Goops I'm under the 5% mark. To be sure, most of the additional load is on the G.E. process -- about 50% of the total CPU load. The Goops process itself uses about 10%. When I close Goops the G.E. process goes back to normal.
I'm using an Asus EEE PC, so, granted it's not the fastest CPU out there but it is a also very popular carputer.
I'm afraid that running with this high of load while driving will not only wear out my computer but also potentially put a drain on the car battery (though I've not done the calculations.. probably not really when I think about computer use vs. car stereo use).
Turning off autotrack produces no significant difference.
Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it. Do others feel running at 75% load constantly is worth it for this software? I certainly am impressed by the free version and would love to upgrade to the Plus or Pro version pending this issue.
Cheers,
Shiraz

Setting up a GPS/GPRS tracking system from scratch.
Hi,
I am thinking of setting up a vehicle and equipment GPS/GPRS tracking solution for my business. I have limited programming experience but am very willing to learn, and this is almost a personal hobby project that might turn into a business opportunity.
I have been trying to get my head around this, can anyone help me figure this out? I want to track cars and fixed equipment (total around 100) using GPS and I want the updates to be sent to me when the position changes using GPRS, and if the vehicle or equipment is not moving then I don't want any updates.
Additionally I want to use Google earth or Google maps (I have a map of my area, unfortunately Google maps does not have an accurate map of my locality, can I digitize my map by scanning it and then assigning GPS coordinates to all major locations and as the map is a scale map the intermediate points are calculated somehow) to display the locations of my assets, I might want to see the tracks sometimes but not always, how long the car has been moving, speed, if it went above the speed limit at anytime, etc. But off the bat the first requirement I have is to be able to see the current location of my asset, if it hasn't moved then no need for updates (GPRS is quite expensive in our neck of the woods).
My cars can have a standard tracker as there is a battery, but my other assets are containers and stands which don't have a power source so I think we'll need some sort of solar charging apparatus. I also want protection against the environment and physical damage, so something like a pelican micro case to protect the gadgetry. I want to do this without having to mortgage my house, so to speak, probably a budget of USD 5000 or less perhaps even lower.
Is there a way and could anyone point me in the right direction. I have taken a look at Goops, Earth Bridge, Franson GPSgate, Sanav DT700 etc, but I can't seem to fully comprehend how it would be put together. Additionally I don't want to host this on the web, I already have a server, I would like to run a server software that talks to my devices and updates my Google earth or Google maps display.Can I have a secure, private group hosted on GPSGate.com that only authorised users with the right passwords can see? Does anyone know if I have to pay for Google earth or Google maps, if I use them in this scenario?
The way I understand the implementation is as follows, maybe someone knowledgeable can shed some light on this. I would get a GPS/GPRS tracker, pop a simcard in it, configure the device with the GPRS APN, username and password for my GPRS service provider and also give the IP address to the device where I want the NMEA 0183 GPRS data packets to be sent. I would also configure the device to send me updates every 5 meters and once every 12 hours, this would take care of the fact that I would only get updates if the device moves (5 meters is greater than the 3 meter GPS accuracy threshold) or once every 12 hours if it doesn't. Then I would install and configure GPSgate server on my web server, make sure the static IP is the same as the one configured in the GPS tracker, switch on the GPSGate server's listner services (for example SANAV listners), now configure GPSgate server to output a KML file to google earth and Voila I have a system that can track 5 assets per GPSgate server license. I don't know how Goops or EarthBridge would fit into this. I would definitely like to not have to pay for GPSgate server (USD 99 per 5 devices) and find a cheap and reliable free way to do this.
Can anyone help? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Hi Brave,
Do you need GPS tracker with real time tracking system? or
Just realtime tracking system

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, apologies

Well the finalidea is to have a realtime GPS tracking system that uses the trackers to get the asset GPS location, sends the location using GPRS and displays it. I don't want to spend a lot, so I assumed the cheapest way to do it would be to get a tracker, and use available technologies, like GPSgate server, Goops and google earth and or google maps to display the realtime location. At the moment I am looking for ideas to do this as cheaply as possible without losing reliability. This probably rules out realtime tracking prebuilt solutions as the cheapest is USD 4000 odd plus the cost of the trackers.
Cheers

Hi Shiraz,
Is there a way to put more memory in the EEE? I'm guessing it is reaching the threshold where it starts having to swap memory to disk (or whatever). You can also try reducing the number of points in the GooPs options dialog. I also think Google Earth has some parameters that can be adjusted to reduce CPU/Memory load.

Hello Jaya,
"Max Speed" is a SpeedTrack parameter that determines when the color coding rolls over. You should set it to the maximum speed at which your vehicle normally travels.
"Max # of Points" is the maximum number of points GooPs will keep and display for this vehicle.
"Point Marker (radius)" is for a somewhat obscure feature that draws a circle of the designated radius around each point.

Hi brave_is,
GooPs will work with some tracking devices basically the same way GPSgate does. You would have the devices send updates to port 51234 on your server running GooPs. GooPs could then interface directly with Google Earth or output a kml file that could be displayed with Google Maps. GooPs will work with the sanav gc101, laipac s-911, and fpi gt20, and probably others that share the same protocol. There is no limit to the number of devices supported.

Hi David,
A while ago I bought GooPs Pro to showcase my company's mobile solutions for the public safety market, in which GooPs helped greatly. We used GooPs to export its data to a (public) FTP server, so others could track real-time where our test vehicle was driving.
Not many customers have Google Earth in use, but everyone knows Google Maps and some actually already have some sort of customized 'portal'. Therefore I'd like to add some important features to the demo, like showing live video and/or pictures from a videocamera - in a info box when clicking on a marker.
So I'd like to request a feature that allows a user to specify content to be shown along with the timestamps and other information, as I currently can't add personal content (like an image, hyperlink etc.). As I know it might be quite some work, I'm just asking for a feature that allows a user to add 'raw data' - so the user can decide himself if it'll be an iFrame, an image, a video or whatsoever.
Hope you can add this, this definately gives it a more personal touch!

Very Useful Feature
This would indeed be a very useful feature that I'm sure would be greatly appreciated by fellow GooPs'ers!

more vehicles on localhost
Hi I ordered Goops Pro, because i need to track more vehicles at the same time.
I am Setting the GPS-devices to send coordinates by gprs to my server.
It's working just fine with one gps-tracker (running localhost)
But adding one more device, will get google earth to flicker between thoose two devices, because it thinks it is one device.
I have tried to put in the ip-address of the tracker in host-name (in goops)
but i cant get it right it still - showing two as one.
The tracker sends along a unique ID with every message, so it should be possible to filter out the right message to the right point in Google-Earth, but i guess Goops just isn't able to that.
My configuration is:
GPS-trackers
Goops
Google Earth
(and maybe a program called GPRS server V.1.02 to put signal from gps to goops)
I have tried the thing without GPRS server , setting up the gpsdevice to send to port 51234,
but then i am lacking the information about what ipnumber the gps-device is given from network.
Any help would be very apreciated.
Sorry for my bad English, Im an older Dane - and it's long time since I went to School.
Any link to a manual on Goops would also be nice.

Hello adweb,
Can you send me a log of what gprs server is sending to GooPs?
How is gprs server getting the data to GooPs? Is it via a COM port?

Hello patpee,
Would this raw data just be inserted into the kml for each timestamp?
Would it be the same data for each timestamp?
The kml for a timestamp now looks like this:
<Placemark>
<name>08/16/07 22:05</name>
<Style>
<IconStyle>
<Icon>
</Icon>
</IconStyle>
<LabelStyle>
<scale>0.75</scale>
</LabelStyle>
</Style>
<Point>
<altitudeMode>absolute</altitudeMode>
<coordinates>-122.69257,45.53627,2155.7</coordinates>
</Point>
</Placemark>
How do you think you would like to see it?
Would you write your own kml and have GooPs replace keywords in the kml with the appropriate data?
Keywords could be something like $lat, $lon, $date, $time, $altitude, $speed, etc.
So a person might modify the GooPs timestamps with something like this:
<Placemark>
<name>$date $time, $speed, $alt</name>
<Style>
<IconStyle>
<Icon>
http://myserver/myimage.gif
</Icon>
</IconStyle>
<LabelStyle>
<scale>0.75</scale>
</LabelStyle>
</Style>
<Point>
<altitudeMode>absolute</altitudeMode>
<coordinates>$lat,$lon</coordinates>
</Point>
</Placemark>

the gprs server receive this,:
i don't know what it sends - that i can't see, but it's via com-port as you wrote.
