Bringing the thread back, but I finally got to installing on my dell insiron 5100. If pictures would help, let me know. I am trying to solder the connections and got a strange result.
In testing with the multimeter, I found two leads that did not have continuity when the button wasnt pressed, but did when the button was presses. I soldered to these points and it had continuity without pressing the button. Now the laptop powers up as soon as power is supplied to the system.
I tired removing and resolder and ended up with the same problem.
Any thoughts?
For now, I took off one of the wires to the switch, and everything works as it did before the install

Have you checked the two wires you soldered on (from the auto turn on module) to see if there is continuity in them? There should not be a connection except for the 1/2 second when you flip your car to on. Sounds like it is acting like the button is always pushed down.

lol sorry I didn't get back here in time. RSX is dead on. Sounds like the button is being pushed or something else along those two wires is being shorted. I would first check from the Jack you soldered in to your laptop power switch. If there's continuity, there shouldn't be (make sure the module plug isn't plugged into it when you check). If that's good, with the module unplugged from any power source and unplugged from the laptop, see if there is continuity on the plug coming from the module, if there is, there is a short along that line, or the power switch line...

Yeah, I think I found the problem. The wires to the jack were coming in contact with the edge of a heat shield and I am thinking that this is where my short was. when pulled away from it, there is no continuity. I will wrap the wires to prevent the problem and we'll see if this gets it.
Thanks.

steve,
just fitted your kit to the laptop, works a treat!
soldered to the switch, and your button switches it on/off ok, does that mean when i wire it into the ignition it will do the same?

Thanks!
It's going in a Dell latitude C640, I've been thinking about getting a docking station from ebay, but I don't think I need to should be easy to get to the leads on the laptop.

All the modules should be shipping out early tomorrow. I ran out of heat shrink and don't wanna half-*** the modules, so I'm running to radio shack tomorrow morning (damn UPS being slow with my parts shipment)...
But Thanks and Cheers...
