I am going to try connecting the relay coil between IGN (through a diode) and the 12V output of the PSU. This performs the "power on button press", but can not perform a "power off button press". So it does the job with just one relay and no capacitor. Plus, there is no timing to worry about, it will always press the button just long enough to bring the computer up.

Without the diode, the relay coil would be energized with reverse polarity once ignition went low. This would hold the button until a forced power-down occured, I think.

I apologize if somebody already proposed this. I have to admit I didn't read the entire thread.

Well my last idea didn't work very well. The internal power supply is not stiff enough to source the relay coil current. I also found that the computer I'm using does not accept button presses that occur simultaneously to external power application.

I did create a two-stage that works. The first relay closes after a cap charges to give a 0.5s time delay. This powers the second relay that pulses the power button. However, I find this setup too cumbersome because it requires a lot of capacitance (I think I used 5400uF)

So did the press once to turn on and hte press once to turn off module ever get finished ? Or is this circuitry still just for power on ? I am getting ready to build my own unit I got my 8 inch dynamix 816 lcd (DOES vga auto on, DOES NOT do auto reverse switch, and the mirror button on the remote DOES NOT do anything.) and I ordered and recieved my dash kit for my 2007 audi a4 but honestdee on ebay sent me the wrong one, he sent me the 99-9105 when I needed the 99-9102 and I ordered the 99-9102 so I dunno how he mixed that up.

I love idea of the module, but I'm not sure if perhaps im doing something wrong, i have it wired up to a docking station, and I've tried reversing the leads coming from the power switch on the docking station. But basically my laptop isnt auto turning on when i start my car, i have to use the emergency switch, and it is acting just like if i were to hit the power button once.

Also i thought the emergency switch was designed to let you hard boot the PC if it froze up for some reason. And no matter how long i hold the switch down it seems to act as though i had only touched the power button briefly. I ran the red-red and black-black on my ex-cigarette lighter, so I'm pretty sure that is wired right. yeah im just at a loss where this could be going wrong. Any help from ANY one would be great.

What would everyone think, if I were to offer a 'ring' module for the 'wake on ring' function of a modem? I am working on just that now, for my setup.

can just 1 module turn on a monitor and a laptop, or do you have to have a separate module for each one?

Sorry I've been absent lately. Been pulling extra 12 hour shifts for people that are sick and/or on vacation...

John, your module shipped out early yesterday,

bgreen, you "should" be able to use one module to do both, but you'll need to modify the cable coming from the module that goes into the plug/jack setup for the laptop. You can just splice into that cable, taking it to the monitor and it should work for you.

Hey W3bMa5t3r...glad to see you're still selling these modules and helping people get their laptops set up the right way.

ok got it! it only worked once! one time! i hear the relay turning on and off but the laptop does not turn on. Yes its wired correctly. It is connected to the docking station's power button. Yes it is soldered correctly. Yes the all three buttons turn on and off the laptop- laptop button - docking station button- and the button that came with the controller.

any other help?

-i think the relay is not "pressing" the button long enough.

The approximate timing is 1/2 second. Are you getting that time between the two clicks of the relay turning off and on?

well it looks like i have wasted my money big time. could have went to radio shack a bought a 99 cent button to manually turn the laptop on and off. what a rip. guess its only for certain laptops, even though they all turn on and off with a button. buyer beware.
