what about a momentary pulse to power-off?
can this be modded so that when the key goes off; it outputs another momentary pulse to initiate shutdown off a device?

figured it out - working great..i used info from this site
http://www.simprojects.nl/toggle_to_momentary.htm
ignore the "keyboard part" but i'm using an SPDT relay that goes on and off with my ignition key and once it returns "un-powered state" the the output goes negative and give me another "pulse" to initiate shutdown as if pressing the power button again.
should integrate this into your boards for those of us wanting a shutdown w/ keyoff
actually, i'm not using this for a computer or a car for that matter; but rather using a programmable thermostat in my home to turn on and off my "window air conditioner unit" which has a momentary push-button on and off, so i can use the temperature sensing and timer unit of my programmable thermostat to control my air conditioner..

I haven't read the whole thread, but this was recently linked to on DC and was wondering if someone can please tell me if the circuit diagram on the first page is the most recent? If so you want to put a flyback diode on the USB powered relay so you don't damage the computer and/or power supply....

turn on module
Hey I am building the module with the parts needed and it didn't work right. Could you post how a more diescriptive wiring diagram. More in detail with the SPDT RELAY? I used the diagram on the packaging to compare to the one you posted and it doesn't work right. So, just wanted to see if you could draw out the 5 legs and which lines they should run to. Thank you.

I have been reading up on this site for a while now, and I want to start my own CarPC Project basically, I got a second hand D600 off ebay (easy to solder to the power on). I really would like to order one of these modules, I think W3bMa5t3r's website is currently under development/reconstruction and W3bMa5t3r's last activitiy was on the 8th of March.
If anyone could provide any assistance on what to do, or if W3bMa5t3r, you read this, could you send me a PM, I'd be greateful, Thank you!
I understand that you may be busy too, I have read the notice on your site W3bMa5t3r.
Much appreciated in advance.
Gurminder.

i think if you can solder the 2 points on a laptop power button, you can solder the rest of this project together. it's really not that hard. for me, the hardest part was soldering the 2 points in my laptop! everything else i soldered was much bigger and chunkier so it was easier than soldering those tiny points on the laptop. totally worth the work imho.

From my local maplins (or even online for that matter), I can't find the specific relays which I need to create the circuit.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I may be able to get my hands on a free laptop, so this is looking very interesting to me right now.
I read here that standby cant be used, because the unit will not send a turn on signal because the usb cable still receives power while the computer is in standby. If someone uses standby, would a press of the emergency switch initiate start-up?

Here's the terms as I understand them:
Sleep = stop the CPU and disk, but keep everything in RAM; draw just enough power to keep the RAM intact
Hibernate = stop the CPU and disk after flushing everything to disk; draw no power at all.
What's the difference between "standby" (your term) and "sleep" (as defined above) ? If they are the same thing, then you're in luck. My laptop turns off power to the USB ports when asleep, I suspect yours will too. That allows the power-on module to wake the computer from sleep when I turn the key.

Great. Thanks for that explanation. Now I also know that I understood what I read in this thread! Ill keep my fingers crossed that the laptop I am hoping to get kills the power to the usb ports on sleep.
(Yes, I said standby, I meant sleep.)

i use hibernate for mine. Since there's no way to send a power down signal when turning off the car (well, not easily), i set the power control panel to put the computer into hibernate mode when the battery reaches 90% or less. since this old laptop has a crappy battery in it that lasts MAYBE 10-15 minutes on a full charge, this works out perfectly. I can stop for gas and usually the laptop is still running by the time i'm done filling up. even if it's not, it still picks up right where it left off. Only bug with this is that sometimes on resume, the music stutters for a few seconds while it's coming out of hibernation. Fine with me - boot time is still under 15 seconds!

I really want to build this circuit, I've been waiting for a reply from Webmaster, but unfortunately he's been inactive for a long time and his website's shop is under maintenance.
I just walked into my local Maplins, and they sell none of the parts that this circuit requires, the staff couldn't even tell me about similar parts which would have done the same trick, If anyone could give me some assistance with buying the parts in the UK that be great.
Thanks in advance!

well the capacitor is a simple part, and if your local parts house can't find one, then they need to hire some better staff!
the relays - you could theoretically use a regular automotive relay for the 12v one from the car - it will just be big and bulky and a bit of overkill, but it will work. the 5v one from the usb (or ps2 in my case) does need to be a small, low-current one so you don't overload your USB +5v rail. the circuit board can be just about anything really. Honestly I had a hard time fitting the relays onto the radio shack proto board. i think just plain perfboard would work better because the pin spacing will be correct.
not sure what other suppliers you have available to you in the UK. In Houston we have a shop called ElectroTex, which is a local supplier. Maybe you have something similar?

Thanks very much for your assistance, I have just placed an order on-line with Maplins for the closest parts as possible to see how I get on with it.
Much appreciated Gibson99, thank you. Will post back with my results when they arrive and I give this a shot.
Cheers again.
