98lite help

98lite help
I am running 98lite using Win ME. I have tried a clean install using the micro option. The problem is that I can not get it to run stable. I keep getting a blue screen with the following message “windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted.” Has any one here installed 98lite on Win ME and over come similar issues? I am also having issues getting my on board sound to work even after checking the bios settings and reinstalling the drivers. Is there a windows option that I must enable to get sound that a micro install omits? I appreciate any help.

First of all, WinME is evile.
Worse than evile, it's festering, putrid garbage.
I wouldn't expect WinME to work well for you, regardless of the installation or the fact that you're trying to tweak it with a utility designed for Win98....

I use a Windows 98SE clean micro install using 98lite, further trimmed to a 22Mb zip, and I have had no problems.

Rob I am very impressed with your setup and your write up on it. Do you think that I am wasting my time with ME? I am using it because I have a paid for version. I am specifically concerned that I may have omitted a critical windows component during my installation(s). I get the blue screen of death after the computer has been on for about 30 min like clock work. I have only loaded winamp, firefox, and MB drivers. I would like to end up with a setup similar to your own eventually but for now many aspects of it are simply over my head. All I need is a bump in the right direction.

TBH if you want a really nice setup then I believe Wndows XP Embedded with HORM and EWF is where it is at. I keep meaning to try this out, but lack of time is a problem.

I wouldn't touch WinME with a long dirty stick. 98SE isn't too bad, but still has its issues. XP is much more stable, but is more tricky to do custom stuff with.

No stinkin' services in win98se.. and a 2sec shutdown

Just make sure you understand each and every option in 98lite: If you choose to totally get rid of IE, you lose quicklaunch bar, mshelp plus other things. (you'll need a win95osr2 cd to copy fileexplorer.)

USB for memory sticks is tricky, but you always can force a memorystick to be recognized at card reader (use latest danelec drivers for win98).

USB2.0, well if you can find drivers for your mobo....

Oh, and make sure your frontend / gps apps is designed to work on a 98 machine (Sygic should, as long as dotnet is there).

PS win98se works fine with 512 MB even with a NVIDIA card.
