MicroXP with Minlogon, EWF, & HORM installed...

...and the results was not what I expected.

System:
VIA M10K
512MB RAM
30BG 4200RPM *i think*
Opus 150W

Software:
RR v11-04-07 as shell
WMP9
K-Lite Codec Pack v2.88
Winamp v5.13
iG v3.0
HD Radio
VAG-COM v3.11-N
AI v3.0

w/ all necessary drivers.

From "key-on" to music averages to 38 seconds from cold boot.
From "Key-on" to music averages to 27 seconds from resume.

6 seconds is waiting for the Opus to send the "power on" signal to the mobo.

This is a pretty lean install, right?

Looking at my hardware, my HDD could be a limiting factor. I have a 10GB 5400RPM HDD lying around here that I could swap to. Would that help my boot times?

Eventually, I am going to transfer to a CF card, but want to do an extensive shakedown of the system since what I do here will evenutally be emulated in my carPCv2.0 Pico-ITX install.

My goal is to get a sub 20 sec HORM or cold boot. Is that possible w/ my hardware and software choices?

I really would appreciate the input.

Is your post time slow? Thats my main issue, I'm using a solid state drive windows boots lighting fast ( 2-3 seconds I'd say) but the post time really slows me down

. Note I'm using full version of XP with minlogon and EWF (no HORM).

Finding motherboards with really fast post times would probably be the biggest decrease in boot times for most of us.

wouldn't Minlogon be a PITA if your consistently upgrading?

POST is only 2-3 seconds (if I understand what POST exactly is). The screen that flashes hardware details soon after initial powerup?

I enabled quick startup and disabled mem checking and via logo display in BIOS,

Often times, I don't even see the initial screen after power up. It's all blank, then the XP logo screen flashes for 1 second, goes blank and then takes RR 7 seconds from the splash screen to playing music. That is all in an average of 38 secs. PC is warmed up too.

I'm not constantly upgrading but I haven't had to many issues with Minlogon most of the programs have installed under minlogon.

If I need to switch back to the orginal winlogon, I've shortcuts to system32 and orginal winlogon, so it goes pretty quick.

I'm trying to figure out your total 38 second cold boot. Correct me where needed

6 seconds for opus to send power to MB
3 seconds for post
1 second XP splash screen
7 seconds for RR to load

I can understand 17's of your boot time but where is the other 21 seconds?

Just blank screens. About 10 seconds before and after the splash screen. TBH, I don't know what's going on during those times.

Ahhh I take it you have noguiboot enabled, if I understand correctly after the bios splash screen you have a blank screen for about 10 seconds then another one after the Xp splash screen.

If thats the case, seem to me that your hard drive is the bottle-neck going to a SSD drives should eliminate that. Just make sure to get one with really fast reads/write speeds I use an MTron.

What kills my boot time is my MB post really slow about 19seconds

once I'm past post screen takes about 4 seconds for windows and RR to load.

Have you run bootvis I find it really help.

No, I have not run bootvis.

I just happen to come across it in a search and also saw the nogui tweak that could shave that second off.

You pretty much nailed it on the head.

I think I'm gonna set up my extra 5400RPM HDD as a secondary drive and copy over my OS install, swap, and see if that makes any difference...

Are all the services tweaked? (i think microxp has a dos wizard to disable services not sure tho) may shave a few secs off boot

you should switch back to winlogon if you want to run bootvis. there are also some other dependencies bootvis has which may not be in your MicroXP (never used it so I don't know).

It took a long time to get to this point and I'd be a real shame if I messed it up because I kind of only know what I'm doing.

You must disable EWF to run bootvis. I doubt bootvis will harm your system but its always a good idea to make an image of your system using a backup software like paragon drive backup. In case of any hicups you can recover your system on under 1/2 hour.

Keep in mind like SFiorito said bootvis may not run in MicroXP....

After installing bootvis click on 'Trace"> "Next Boot + Driver Delays" you will be prompted to reboot.

After reboot bootvis will autorun (may take several minutes) and display some statistics, click on "Trace" > "Optimize System" you will be prompted for a reboot.

Once windows reboots, you will see a message optimizing system, this may take quite some time especially if this the first time you've run it.

the components/services are removed from tinyxp (one of them i believe is the scheduling service)

last time I ran bootvis with minlogon it didn't give all of the trace data....can't remember exactly what, it's been a very long time since I've used it... sorry...
