Hi guys. This will be my first attempt at a car PC and I'm slowly getting there after months of research. At the moment I'm trying to get my PC to boot as quickly as possible. I'm running XP (heavily nLited) on a D945GCLF2 (the mini-ITX dual core atom board) with 1GB RAM. At the moment my cold boot times are around 30-35 seconds.

What I've done so far:

• Changed to minlogon
• Removed unwanted startup items from the registry
• Stopped unnecessary services
• Optimized the BIOS
• Removed themes/eye candy/special effects
• Removed unneeded fonts

There's probably some other minor tweaks I've done too. I've been through the stickies and done most of the things I could. Anyone think its possible to improve on this? How do some people get 15/20 second boot times?

One other thing you can do is download TuneXP (get it here: http://www.download.com/TuneXP/3000-...-10290929.html) and run the ultra-fast boot option. It may or may not help but it's worth a shot.

Hibernate instead of shutting down...
Also make sure you disable "search for network PC's and printers" and give DiskTrix defragmentor a try...it has the ability to move whatever files you like (hibernate file, exe's, dll, sys32, etc...)to the outer portion (physically) of your HDD, because the platters move much faster there than anywhere else, it speeds up read/write times...

Wasnt there this neat trick some other PC mnfg was using, where they have a script which, when the computer is "shut down", merely restarts it and hibernates, waiting to be turned back on to resume hibernation? Seems effective to me!

Ok sweet thanks guys, I think I must have it all now. Just checking I hadn't missed some really obvious and useful trick haha. I've got it to cold boot in 30 seconds and from hibernating in about 15 seconds so I'm happy with that.

If hibernate works for you, 15 seconds is pretty damn good.
