Installing xp now.. onto a fat system. A guide would be good so I could follow it through and test

Sorry for my bashing in on an old thread with my first post, but I have a little secret here that might come in handy for you guys...

I've read that you had problems with front-ends on HORM systems. There is a little trick, but you'll have to use NTFS to get it, first download this:

Sysinternals Junction

Junctions are little known in NTFS. They are similar to hardlinks in Linux: It actually is possible to create an "empty directory" with junction and redirect this directory to a totally different directory... even on other disks!

So you could create C:\Frontends on your C: CF card, and once you enter this directory you find yourself on, for example E:\front - however, all windows apps report c:\frontends.

It might be possible to create a junction like above, and then "install" your frontends to this junction. They will actually reside on your E drive.

Depending on the frontends you are using (I have no experience with it at all), if the config files/states are in a directory on its own, you could install, configure, then *move* this directory to your HD drive. Then create a junction towards it.

Hope this helps out guys...

PS. Alternative to CF card booting? Got cash? Check this out: Google for gigabyte iRam....

You're welcome. I was looking at "hacked" EWF for other purposes and wound up here. Couldn't resist to register and tell you about this. Take what you need and give what you can on the 'net!

Keep up the good work guys!

Also, when doing hibernate, the hibernation will only include the junction, and not the contents in the junction.

I just hope it's compatible with EWF, I haven't tested this yet, no time for the moment.

Are you sure you need to run EWF. I know in windows 2000/XP you can change Ntuser.dat to Ntuser.man. Here is a link how to set it up, it might help you guys out.

I thought it might help out, it's a way to make a read only user profile. if any files were added or deleted, all changes would be reset. (added files would be deleted and deleted files would still be there)

Only for files contained in the mandatory profile.

Horm goes beyond this, it's for the *entire* filesystem.

With mandatory profiles, you could still add or remove software, etc. It's just that changes in the currect profile aren't stored.

sorry malkalm, i hadnt quite understood, but if it only protects the current files thn HORM might act up... because you will be hibernating one way (frontend one way, etc) and then coming back from hibernation in a different (potentially) state...

malkalm, the reason we use EWF is to protect the whole disk from any writes as well as to use HORM for faster and more reliable booting. we're not looking to simply protect the user profile.

i'll test the junction out today.

Yet when I look in
