Is there a *legal* alternative for EWF? I'd like to boot networked computer off iSCSI and redirect writes to *other* iscsi disks... RAM writes aren't enough, because these computers will be using roaming profiles.
EWF would do just nicely but it's not ok with the MS EULA... can't just take a few things out of a XPe and transfer them to XP installs.
Closest thing I've found is Netboot/i - this will enable any XP machine to boot from iSCSI, and optionally redirect writes to RAM. In my situation, the RAM would be eaten up quite rapidly.
If money is no objection, neoware image manager can do all of the above, but you can't buy it below 50 users.

Using HORM and a paging file???
Sorry to jump in here, hoping to get some help: I've got a burning question that I cannot find an answer to anywhere on the net...
If you set up HORM to protect your OS boot volume (e.g. C: ), can you still use a paging file on an unprotected volume (e.g. D: ) to permit virtual memory functions?
If so, then when you resume from hibernate that paging file will be invalid as it will be from a different state than the fixed hibernation file.
How to fix this?
I need to have a paging file but I would like to use HORM.
Any thoughts?

Is there a solution for :
A EWF protected drive with the OS and file for hibernation on another drive linked with "junction.exe" or "hardlink.exe" ?

no, have you tried it? i've never tested that so it'd be interesting to know if it works. Although, nowadays flash memory is so cheap that it may be easier to just buy a larger drive so you don't have to worry about storing the hibernation file on another drive.

Hi SFiorito,
I wished you would be the first to reply.
I also hoped YOU had test it and had the answer (and the tutorial )
So i will work on it soon ( i first have to send back my broken Jetway motherboard for a replacement )

I don't want to put the file on another drive because of size problem...But only for Write protection problem.
If EWF enable on C:, I won't be able to write on C, so the RAM context won't be written in the file on the C:.
But if i hard link the file on C: to a file on D: which is WRITE enabled, I think i will be avle to store the RAM context.....

Hibernation bypasses EWF. There's no need to place the hiberfil.sys onto another drive.

Great news !!!
So I will continue my idea on Programs files folder.
For exemple in Centrafuse I use, when I change setting and save them, It doesn't save the "settings.xml" (like ".ini" file) due to the write protection.
I will "hardlink" this file and other like it which need to be updated for settings and others...

Hey guys, I've recently tried to get the whole EWF/HORM thing working on my carputer. I got as far as replacing the ntldr file, and updating the registry...when I restarted, I got a ntldr cannot be found...so I had to re-install XP...
I'm guessing that I didn't have the registry file configured to the proper partition; I'm not planning on using a CF card and was wondering if there was a way to find out which partition location I have to put in the "archname" location...
Or am I totally off and messed up some other part of the installation? Any input would be appreciated.

What partition do you have WinXP installed?
Do you have multiple harddrives?
