OK, using Nlite, I'm sorted with a 950 meg install, but that includes NM Destinator, the UK map, Centrafuse and it's reqs, Ace Mega codec pack, and ogg codecs, and Phone control. That isn't bad at all. I have minlogon and EWF installed, and virtual memory/swap turned off.

It isn't particularly quick in VMWare, but I expect it to be much faster on real hardware, especially when I will have double the memory, and not shared with the host PC. Stil have to turn EWF on too, so that I can power on/off without damaging the file system, should I need to.

Damn optimizing winxp is a headache. I'm on my 4th nLite build

Dude, my current installation is number 15. Expect many more before you're fully happy with what you have. Then a couple of more after that.

I think I got to number 17, trying to work out what could and couldn't be removed, and trying to use a registry entry in run once to install all the applications automatically. Worked once or twice, then started getting Cache/missing file errors.

So now I build them into the image and install them manually afterwards.

This stuff isn't all it's crapped up to be....

I nlite'd WinXP sp2 (20 times before i got it right)
Installed all drivers manually
Configured my system (disabled services, devices, etc)
Installed several small apps (netstumbler,speedfan,bootvis)
Did minlogon successfully (17kb file and added .reg)
Ran bootvis and optimized boot twice

Here are my results:
25 seconds until WinXP boot screen finishes
37 seconds until Desktop hits the screen
Even longer until all apps are started

I disabled indexing service, security center, my startup programs include only 2 things which are necessary for my video card.

What am I doing wrong?

I think I'm gonna try out a 5400rpm laptop hd. I have a 90w opus that I want to run a lot of stuff and I could use the extra watts.

****.. you've got my mind going now. But 7200rpm 3.5" is more power, heat, noise, and more risk of failure. 5400rpm 2.5" seems to be best, you know? Not as slow as 4200, but not as nonpractical as a 7200rpm 3.5"

You know they make 2.5" 7200 RPM drives, right?

I have a 60GB 7200 RPM 2.5" drive in my Dell Inspiron, and it rocks.

They're a bit more expensive than the 4200 or 5400 laptop drives, but they're worth it.

You could always get a 7200 RPM 2.5" Hitachi makes them

On my 20GB 5400RPM Seagate 2.5 after NLite, Drivers, Bootvis, Minlogon. From hitting the power button to desktop I get about an average of 25 secs.

Yeah, but they're expensive. Look around. A 40GB 7200rpm is close to $100 whereas a 40GB 2.5" 5400rpm is about $50-60.

I'd be much more happier with 25 secs to desktop on a 5400rpm than 37 seconds with a 4200rpm.

Anyway I'm good with my 4200rpm at the moment cause it's not installed in my car yet. When I start making regular mobile use out of it I'm gonna need to replace it. I'll just wait for a good deal.
