I've encountered some software doesn't want to install when using minlogon...
The way around is to install those programs before applying minlogon. After that, I have no problem running those apps. Well, except for one. BootSkin

installing before you apply minlogon is assuming that you never touch your PC after you install it...simply not the case for I'd say like 90% of the people on this board.

Hi Red,
That's my case too. I just get back to winlogon, install the apps required then move back to minlogon.
It's tedious, but it works... to a certain degree. For example BootSkin. I can't install on minlogon. I went back to winlogon and got it installed. But when I've in minlogon, I can't run BootSkin. It will bootup into a BSOD...

Ended up being able to just go to the Administrator Documents files from within minlogon, then just copy over the SD folder to the Default User Documents folder.
No need to get out of minlogon this way.

man call me stupid if i missed this, but did anyone else have issues with running programs after using minlogon. everything off my desktop is gone, and for example, if i try and go to explorer and run centrafuse, all my settings are wiped out and buttons are gone. i cant reinsall cf either, cuz its asking for .net
what account does minlogon actually log us on under? and what can i do to get all those settings moved over?

It uses the 'DefaultUser' log on. The reason you are having problems is that it's logging you onto a different profile.
You will have to copy over all of your settings from your previous profile. You should be able to go into 'My Documents' and see the folder for the Administrator (and possibly other profiles) and copy over the info from there. Remember, it's logging you onto a different profile completely. Once you have it all set-up under the new profile, you shouldn't run into any issues.

unfortunately, i already tried that, no good. i also tried booting again using winlogon, uninstalling cf, and reinstalling for 'everyone'. then booted again using minlogon, and no luck.
has anyone got cf working under minlogon?
on another note, does minlogon speed up an driver loading phase (such as when the windows xp scrolling bar screen shows during bootup), or does it only speedup once the shell loads and the mouse appears?
ive got a pIII 850mhz, 256mb ram, and got about 33sec boot time using winlogon. i dont think you can use bootvis with minlogon, so i cant find the improvement, but my shell loads pretty darn quick as it is (3-4 seconds) so i probably wont see much improvement right?
ive done all the services.msc tweaks as listed in that 20 page guide, and disabled all the ports and devices im not using, so is there anything else i can do at this point?
btw, while viewing my boot tracing, the vast majority of the driver loading falls under unknown, is this normal?

I just had a hard drive crash on my carpc, so I had to go through all of this again. I had the Minlogin working before, but I had to follow this thread cuz I couldn't remember how I got it to work before. I have the same problem with winlogon.exe reappearing as others have. To make it easy for noobs in the future, here is the simplest way of getting just the minlogon working:
1)Download this minlogon.cab file from here: (other links in this thread seem to be dead)
http://thuun.boot-land.net/index.html
2)double click the minlogon.cab file and copy the minlogon.exe file to your desktop, rename it to winlogon.exe
3)Open notepad, copy the text this text to the notepad, then save the file as "minlogon.reg":
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Config"=dword:00000017
4)Restart the system, tapping F8 to bring up the safe mode list, start in safe mode
5)go to \Windows\System32 and rename winlogon.exe to winlogon.exe.bak
and place the winlogon.exe file you renamed on your desktop into this folder
6)double click the minlogon.reg file to update the registry (if you don't do this you will fark your system.
7) restart and it should start with no login screen, but you will be logged in as system rather than administrator or whatever.
8)get your ctrl-alt-del working http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/winn...-minlogon.html

Hi,
I downloaded the minlogon.cab file from the site you mention, and when I open it with WinRAR I see that there is a 24kb minlogon.exe file and a 17kb minlogon.exe deeper in the cab file... I assume the one we should use is still the 17kb file... right?
Thanks,
Carlos

If you replace winlogon with minlogon do you lose the ability to access network shares? I'm not sure if this is that did it or if I disabled a service I shouldn't have..
I'm on a network and I'm trying to do a net use in dos to a file share and it's saying it completed successfully w/out even asking me for the password.
Then when I try to access the share it says access denied! :S

you have to use net use properly and force it to overwrite the crediantials since its trying to logon to the network shares via a system account.
Dont know how to truly fix it. probably have to look through GPedit.msc (group policy) to see if that can be changed.
Easiest way to change the creds is to goto Control panel - Printers - Add new printer - Add network printer, type in the network share ie \\computer. It will ask you to overwrite the creds. After you type in a proper Username and pass.
There are other ways but I find that one of the fastest as explorer doesnt like to do what its supposed to do half the time. Mapping a network drive can do it but it has issues in explorer. Can't remember the full cmd of net use, too lazy to look it up.

Is this the same result as using the setting in nlite where you can autologon as just the Administrator account and not create any other user accounts?
or am i missing something?

minlogon uses the System account and cuts out a lot of logon actions and security stuff going on in the OS when using accounts. It's meant for truly embedded devices that don't need any of that. It cuts down boot time significantly, but it's not for all scenarios.
