The sandisk you got, is the fastest one. What CF adaptor are you using, could be it doesnt support the fast speeds?

The IV is the fastest, and there have been plenty of people that have used the III without problems. I have tried two CF adapters, one is generic from ebay and the other is from logic supply.

I picked up a new intel D945GCLF motherboard myself along with a 4gb extreme III and I have a few adaptors laying about so I will let you know if I have an issue with the mobo also.

2 cards 1 install (full)
Want to get two 4 or 8 gb CF cards. 8gbs prob. My question is this. Has anyone put a full install of XP on a CF. I want to put FULL installs on both cards. The cards I am looking at are Transends and have a lifetime warr. I figure I'll get two (one fails RMA as I use the other). I will only have OS, GPS, and RR. Music and other stuff on a USB (removable) drive. Don't care about speed (too much) but, I am trying to get my rig size down as well as a little more resistant to cold and heat.
AND YES I DID

keep in mind that Navigation software requires gigs of data to hold the maps and POI DB. I would recommend to test your full install on a HDD or in a VM first to see how much room you actually need.

Thanks SFiorito for the reply. Although I haven't checked my current HD the specs on my assortment of boxes (Garmin 1.5 gb,XP home 1.5 gb and various other progs >1 gb) leads me to think 8 gbs will be fine. I will double check though. Thanks again.

Well I finally completed the JK pc, everyhting is running perfect including EWF from the hard drive.
The problem I am having now is with the SanDisk Extreme III 4gb cards, I bought 2 and both are doing the same thing. When setting the cards up under DOS to make them bootable, I am getting some weird errors. When I try to format with the /s switch to test them, DOS complains about not enough memory then ends with "divide overflow" The drive actually does format but it is not boot able and DOS is not installed to it. I have tried now on 2 different PC's and a couple different versions of DOS, same thing on both cards. Both machines I tried have 1 gig of RAM. What I am thinking is that maybe I need a machine with at least 4gb of RAM in order to format and bootprep the 4gb flash card. I have a small 32mb older sandisk that I just tested and it works perfectly. So does anyone using a 4gb+ CF actually have a system up? If so any tips?

Nope, I had issues with my 8GB Extreme III as well.

The same types of errors?
I think I am going to try installing XP from CD to the CF, then if it works add EWF and go on from there.

I don't think I got those kinds of errors, just for some reason I had a hard time getting the CF card to transfer any faster than 2MB/sec from any of the three cf-ide adapters I was using at the time. Two of them I bought from the recommended stores on this forum. If I hooked the card up via USB they transferred just fine. Never did figure it out and just used a HDD and I haven't had any problems so far.

Interesting. I have no problems with I/O throughput through my CF >IDE adapters, I bought 6 or so different styles from Taiwan. Problem seems to be with the Extreme III cards being boot able. Ill report back in a bit i'm setting up something a little different to install win.
**EDIT**
IT WORKS! Patience is virtue.
I have the 4GB extreme III up and running XPE minlogon and EWF using NTFS, My install method is very different from the posted instructions but it worked like a charm. I will post some instructions shortly. I also took a video, 20 second cold boots from hitting the on button to explorer GUI.
...may try running tiny vista with EWF on flash

OK what I did was install TinyXP ISO directly on the CF card from a SATA CD rom drive. This is the only possible way I could get XP on my 4gb (or higher) CF card. Having the CF plugged into the IDE port with a female adapter (no cable)
Before I installed I formatted the card with NTFS using a different windows machine. When the installer asks you will not need to format, just install directly to the card. After installed disable paging file, add the drivers and software, add EWF, minlogon and the system is good to go. I suppose you could make a slipstream XP ISO, and install it the same way. Anyway the system has been in use for a couple weeks now and it is stable and FAST as heck!
Specs:
INTEL D945GCLF Mini-ITX MoBo ATOM processor
1Gb RAM
266x speed 4Gb PNY Optima PRO UDMA Compact Flash on the master IDE
M2 ATX
Cold boot to desktop 20 seconds, clean shutdown 3 SECONDS!!!
Also for the record, I am using a 4gb PNY module now, a bit faster than the Extreme III Sandisk. XP also see this setup as a true hard disk for those wanting to use some features that need this option. All the SanDIsk I have used worked well but XP always see's it as a removable disk. Not so with the PNY, as far as XP knows its a true hard disk.
