so what do you download? Windows XP Embedded SP2 Update Evaluation Edition?
Will it work on WinXP SP1?
I'm downloading the SP1 Tools, SQL Server Desktop Engine, WinXP SP1 Embedded Database
Do I need the WinXP Embedded SP2 too?

yes, you need XPe SP2. It'll run on Win2000 or any version of XP.

Stuck in the installation process of the XPe SP2.
I think I installed SP1 correctly, run setup from Disk1, and then installed the following in order:
-Tools Setup
-Database Engine Setup
-Database Setup
-Remote Boot Setup
and then exit
Went to disk3 and run the setup.exe program and installed the following
-Database Engine Update
-Tools Update
but when I clicked Database Update, out comes a window that its extracting files to a temp directory on the WinXP drive, and after that, it asks me to backup my database before I update it. I click OK to resume the installation.
Then the Service Pack Installer comes up and tries to connect to the name of this PC. After a while out comes the following message.
------------
Service Pack Installer - Error
Cannot Connect to the database - please check the database
Setup cannot continue
-----------
I even tried to run Start->All Programs->Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio->Component Database Manager and then it says Connecting to server MyPCNAME... and then times out saying "Cannot connect to the database at MyPCNAME. Please verify your database connection."
I am stuck at this part, what does it mean verify your database connection? Where do I set it?

Do you have windows firewall running? If so you'll have to make some ports open to allow file sharing and sql server to receive connections. Also, make sure SQL Server is actually running.

I'm following the directions linked in the first post in this thread...
When I get to the stage where I run "ewfmgr c:", I still should not have connected my CF card, right?
OK, so when I get to the stage where I run "ewfmgr c:", a window pops up very quickly then dissapears. So I can't tell how much RAM my overlay is taking up. BUT, I don't get an error saying that an EWF volume cannot be found either.
As a test, I deleted a couple of directories (my pictures, my videos) and then rebooted. Upon rebooting, those directories are gone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't they have been there since EWF should have been enabled?
Did I go wrong somewhere along the way?

you need to open up a command line and run ewfmgr in the command line, not from the run menu otherwise you won't be able to see it.

OK, I opened a command prompt and now I get this message when I run "ewfmgr c:"
"failed getting protected volume configuration with error 1."
Any idea what is wrong?

That's the problem. I didnt know how to get the SQL server running in the first place.
Anyhow, I noticed that I need a reboot at that point. After that the SQL server will start to run and I no longer have installation issues.
Btw, SFiorito, great write up. Really straight forward! Well done.
Just a couple of points
1) Maybe add the reboot part above into your guide
2) You need to mention that when creating resmany.dat, its not a "simple text file". It really needs to be empty! I had pulled some hair out trying to figure out when HORM didnt work, till I created an EMPTY file..
A couple of questions
Can we delete all the directories made by XPE after we have extracted minlogon, ewf.sys, ewfmgr and ewfntldr? How do we do it, uninstall or just a straight delete?

well, you shouldn't have to reboot to start up sql server. it should've been installed and started automatically. If not you can just use the services admin tool (or run "net start mssqlserver"). Regarding the resmany.dat file, all you have to do is create a text file using the right-click new menu and rename it.
jackboot: have you rechecked all the registry entries? did you remember to change the permissions on the root key before you imported the reg entries? what type of drive are you installing on? is it a regular ide drive?

HOORAY!!!
OK, got it working. I re-read all the threads (ugh) and came across SlashEMc2k's post about having the same problem. See it HERE. I still don't understand why the download from Microsoft's site contains the old files or where these "new" files come from, but I can confirm that my EWF install is now working.

Can someone clarify for me...
EWF *completely* disables writes to the drive? Or are "some" kind of writes allowed?
Also, when I run "ewfmgr c:" it says:
"memory used for data 325632 bytes"
What exactly is this referring to? I am installing this all on a 1GB Extreme III CF

Question
I've got everything up and running w/ ewf and it states that its enabled and it is indeed working.. but if I shut my machine down and restart it safemode / last known and startup normal configuration shows...
I can boot normally and EWF is still enabled...

Intellaworks: read the document linked at the beginning of this thread...
Jackboot: all writes are disabled to the drive as long as ewf is enabled (unless you start using extremely lowlevel system calls to write to the disk, but in general all writes are disabled). the memory usage is how much ram your disk overlay is taking up. remember: all writes are stored in memory by ewf while the system is running. when you reboot it either loses that data or, if you decide to commit it (ewfmgr c: -commit) then it saves it do disk.

One bug I’ve found is that booting with EWF, XP always brings up the recovery options at boot up. We can disable this by deleting the ‘bootstat.dat’ file
got it, that defiantly wasn't there last time I read it, thanks just the same !!!
I was curious how you got the data from one drive to another ?? I was planning on using ghost boot but it wont see the Fat16 drive, I was able to boot to dos using format c:/s on my CF so I know that its working...
I've been thinking about using xcopy ???
