Okay, I got my Extreme III a day early! Did a couple of tests from POST to desktop on the Ultra II and it varied from 23 to 24 seconds. Copied the OS over to the Extreme III and I've been consistently getting 18 seconds. Not bad I guess. I hope SanDisk keeps improving!! Only thing is the SanDisk utility to make the drive fixed (versus removable) doesn't work on this card. I guess the controller is new on the Extreme III's (makes sense I guess).

oohh. thanks for that piece of info. I need my CF card to appear as fixed disk. I have a second writable partition on it. It will be for config etc.
Did you ask Sandisk if there is a different utility for the Extreme III?

What config files do you mean? Do you consistently write to this second partition? That's just going to wear out that part of the CF drive first and then what? I wrote to SanDisk but I never even got a response from my first request a few weeks ago for the other utility so I'm not expecting anything.

Well for example, frodoplayer keeps track of the last song you were listening too. It writes this when you exit or shutdown.
This is a pretty important feature in my opinion, so i'm not listening to the same song every time i boot up. I like it to pick up where it left off.
When destinator can be run off that partition I want it to save any new addresses I put in there.
So it'll be one write every time i shut down and one more every time I add an address. Compare this to how many pictures you can take using the CF card in a camera and it seems very reasonable to expect the CF card to last for a very long time.
I'm sure I won't start my car 100,000 times before it will be in the junk yard.

knubile:

What part number did you buy from prism.com? I am also using a VIA (M10K)

Where did you buy your CF card from? A Canadian source would be great...

Did you decide on the extreme instead of the Ultra II because of the operating temperature difference (-20 vs. 0c)?

Are you going to switch to the Ultra III?

I want to buy parts and get on this ASAP so I appreciate your help! It is -28 today so I need to get this thing working!

I would recommend the Extreme III unless you absolutely need the disk to be fixed.

I'll ditto SFiorito's last post. He linked to the site selling the Extreme III in an earlier post.
I would get it if I didn't need the 2nd partition.
I got the Extreme over the Ultra II for temperature and speed. I couldn't find a source for it easilyt/cheaply. I ended up getting it at a local Black's in the mall my girlfriend works at. She get a discount at any store in the mall. Their normal price is $200CAD. Pretty rediculous if you ask me. And every jackass on ebay from the states told me shipping was $40US.
So no way I'm paying that.

I wish I could try ta my old lexar with the new CF card adapter. I'll try to borrow it and try it. Hopefully its the IDE adapter that was my problem.

Prism only sells on CF adapter now. I was emailed and told they only have the one that has both 40 and 44 pin connectors. It's being sold at the same price as the other ones.

Just looked it up. The model number is AD-CF125IDE04003.

im tempted to return my 2gb lexar 12mbit card to newegg right now, and buy the 20mbit 1gb sandisk extreme III.... but i dunno

i have to setup the carpc in my car, because i do not have an extra atx power supply, nor do i have a ac/dc converter that will power my pw-200-v

is setting up an image mandatory for cf setups? i planned on just installing the cf card, and installing my nlite xp setup and all my apps/drivers... is the limited writes THAT limited?

you should definitely return the lexar and get the extreme iii. that's a huge difference in speed between 12MBps and 20MBps. i'm sure you could install an nlite xp directly onto the card, but i think it'll be faster and easier to do it on a regular hard drive and then copy it over to the CF disk. dont' forget all the configuration changes you may have to make, plus installing drivers, 3rd party software, etc., etc.

You can also figure you're going to have to do it more than once. Make a mistake here or there and you have to reinstall. You don't want to have to do it too many times.
If you can, play it safe and install on a hard drive.

damn that newegg restocking fee... i'll see if i can email them and see if theyre gonna stock teh extreme III anytime soon, perhaps theyll waive the fee if i ask for "store credit" to buy the other cf card...

15% of $180 + shipping kind of sucks
