XP Embedded Components

Hello everyone. I must say that i love this forum and it has helped me get really far in my quest for a carputer, yet i still need to get a stable windows xpe installed. I have allready gotten a copy of XPe to run on my target computer, but i have noticed that i need to add a lot of custom componets. Can someone please post either you .SLX file, or list all the components that you have in your project.

Thank You All

-and don't tell me to cause thats all i've been doing for 5 months.

Well, most of the topics in this OS forum are about optimizing XP, especially on using XPe components in XP. Specifically EWF and minlogon. You should read through some of these threads and you'll see that with nlite we can create an "embedded" image much easier than you can with XPe and the performance/size is relatively the same.

I have read through them, but maybe someone should list all the MANDATORY components so you can run and configure the operating system from inside the Xpe. I mean I got the os to load but I’m missing my Motorola wifi card drivers and I don’t to have directx8 I want directx9c.

I don't think we're on the same page... I'm not using XPe at all. I pulled two components from XPe (EWF and minlogon) and got them working on a regular XP installation. That way you don't have to worry about using the XPe Tools to build an image or the licensing issues, you just install XP like you normally would or use an nLite modified installation of XP and you install either or both of EWF and minlogon. It's much easier than dealing with XPe and the end product is basically the same.

Well the licensing issue i have no problem with (i allready took care of that) but i would still like some feedback from people who have XPe and what kind of components they include into their custom image. Thanx

Do this...install a hard drive on your target pc with all of the dev software already installed run TAP then save that file and put the drive back in your dev pc then run Target designer using the data you got from TAP from there you check your build, configure it how you want it, build it and copy to a cf card (or whatever media your using) then put that on your Target device and boot into FBA

Maybe i'm not clear enough. I allready have xpe running, and i have no problem with that. But there are a lot of components that are sometimes required to run Centrafuse, OBD2, WiFI Cards, GPS applications... and other software. I want to know what people put in there images( items like System Properties, Internet Explorer, DAO Engine, etc...)

No you weren't clear at all... I don't know if there are any people actually using XPe in their systems. I know a lot of people experimented with it, myself included, but I think most got discouraged just for the problems you're experiencing. Basically, your best bet is to look at the requirements for your frontend and work from there. You may want to contact your frontend developer and see what 3rd-party tools and Windows services (as in MDAC, Media Player, or IE) he uses. Dealing with 3rd-party drivers and software may be more complicated so you'll just have to use trial and error...

Or you could just use an nLite XP + EWF + MinLogon install and be done by now.... (sorry I just had to throw that in there)

OH! in that case use regmon and filemon to see the registry entries and files your programs use to work..then you have to create a custom component using all of those dependencies and files... search on MSDN for creating custom components.

Well, see the thing I don't understand is you're starting with XPe and trying to make it work like XP which is a pain to begin with and by the time you're done really just ends up defeating the whole purpose of XPe. Now, making XP work like XPe is a lot easier and we've already done it. My system is happily booting off a CF card and running whatever software I need. By the time you're done what advantage do you have over an nLite install? Yeah, you may have more control over what to remove, but now you have to sit there and figure out what components to add back in to get your software working.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I guess I'm just curious as to what advantage you think XPe gives you? If it's to install to flash, well we already covered that with the EWF mod for XP. Boot times and size aren't that different between a working XPe image and a tweaked nLite image.

Good luck!

Well for starters I’m network security guy who likes to play with all the software and hardware that falls into my hands. Also I already have a perfect configuration of XP Pro for my carputer. After I complete my setup image with all the proper and required components I intend to publish my SLX file for anybody to download, all you would have to do is through your hardware TAP generated component into this and deploy. On top of everything there IS a difference between an XPe setup and nLite tweaked setup otherwise Microsoft would no longer make xp embedded edition. I also do a lot of other development where knowledge of xpe would come in handy. In the real car world there are only so many options you really want in a car, xp embedded is the best choice.

Thanx.
