The link below has a good explanation on how windows boots up with some fixes/optimization. I didn't know how prefetch worked until I read it here.

NLite to chop down the size of a Windows XP installation, include drivers (especially those needed to install essential components for the installation itself eg RAID), service packs, and tweak settings, plus make unattended setup.

Ive got a "complete" guide that I found for cleaning out Windows. The guy gives reasons for not using stuff like nLite and LiteXP, and they are valid. Ill keep using them though.
