Windows Vista Beta... sleep?

The Windows Vista Beta version is available for download. It says there is a new feature called sleep which allows it to resume in 2-3 seconds like standby, but it uses the low power consumption of hibernate... anyone else seen this? Would it work with a program like Centrafuse?

Hibernation doesn't have lower power consumption.. It has ZERO power consumption. It writes the entire system state from RAM to a file on the hard drive.
You're thinking of Standby (or Suspend to RAM) which does require power to keep the contents of memory.

Now, Vista may be doing something entirely new and different... I don't know...
Perhaps you have some resources you could link to to show the rest of us?

I mean it is HHD. These are Hybrid Hard Drives and have a flash ram inside, so when you put PC into sleep mode it saves RAM in disk but on the flash part, so it is faster than hibernate.

What he is refering to is the ability for Vista to use flash drives as ram. These reason it would use less power than the current standby (which stores state data in RAM) is that is can write to the flash ram, which requires no power to hold data (it's non-volitale).

Hope this helps. I may do some testing of Vista on my carPC once it is installed. I have to do Vista testing at work anyways, so might as well bring my work home with me...

Beware that Vista will eat your graphics controller alive. If you're looking for all the new look & feel, then you'll need a very strong graphics controller.

Many of the devs around "here" can't run Vista in it's full glory... There was quite a surge at the local BestBuy/CompUSA/Circuit City to buy new adapters as the releases came out.

The good news is that Vista will only activate what it thinks your adapter can handle. You can get a decent idea of what will & won't be active by first running the Advisor:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...r/default.mspx

Something to keep in mind is that _regardless of what MS claims_ Vista wants memory, and a lot of it. "Will it run in 256meg"? Yeah, if you like 20 minute logons. 512 is only "okay". We have 3Ghz machines here with 1 gig in them and it's doggy at times. the 2gb machines are much better.

Vista also likes to be on disk... You should be running a fast drive with a large onboard cache for best performance. Being able to put the swap file on a different IDE _controller_ (not "channel") is ideal.

These recommendations aren't anything new for Windows OS's... But not folllowing them is much more apparent in Vista.

Oh... I think we all know about the issues around USB reconections after Sleep or Standby? I've seen Vista HANG trying to deal with certain devices when waking up. Your mileage may vary, tester beware, remember it's still "Beta".

And... It's a 4GIG download and will look for 15GIG to install into. Make sure you have disk space handy.

Yeah I run Vista at home and it's a beast on the graphics but ram wise it doesn't use up much more then XP IMHO.

Given that this thread is 4 months old and thus the info may be out of date - what build do you have at home?

I test Vista at MS and I dunno if I would use anything other than the most recent beta - RC2 or just wait until it comes out. Either way, I wouldn't install it in your car unless you have a pretty current and expensive setup (CPU, ram and graphics wise).

Wow I normally notice the dates of threads but I missed it on this one.
I'm using RC2 5600 at home. It's as solid as any version of XP I have used. Media Player is still screwy but I heard they mixed the issues with it. I just haven't updated to the new release yet.

I agree. While you "could" get it running on your average CarPC it's not going to run well IMHO. My home system is beefy enough to handle Vista but even then Vista could bring it to it's knees turning on alot of things. It's the OS of the future and really built to run on systems of the future. I guess MS is finally planning ahead of time for once.

I may have to install a RC build in my car sometime to try out the Sleep feature and see if it really does what it says it does when the PSU does the hard off.

??? Are you talking about Vista actually surviving the sequence of sleep, power off, power on, wake?

Well, from what I understand (and I just tested it on a box) is that Sleep keeps you computer on like Standby, but if you lose power it will resume like Hibernation. However, from my single test (I put it to Sleep and unplugged the power) it doesn't work - I plugged it back in and booted up and it booted like a normal startup. Do I misunderstand the functionality here?

Umm, you may have drank too much of the KoolAid over there.

I agree that Vista is supposed to do what you've been reading, but I've never seen it work right. I've only ever seen it work as XP does now, which is what you're seeing in the lab.

Technically, Sleep is a low-power keep RAM alive mode; it's still drawing power. Hibernation is the flush-to-disk. What you're hoping for is the hybrid mode, which is where it does the flush of hibernate, then sleeps. _In theory_ the hibernate file should catch on next boot if the machine loses power.

oops.
