as an update to my above post,I checked my sprint balance, 60 some bucks. Then after using the phone as a modem happily for about oh, 20 minutes(after 7pm, ha) I recieved a phone call. answered and talked for maybe 10 mins tops. Had dinner. went to check voicemail, phone shut off. Logged back into pcs website- current balance 148.00- over spending limit and all. IRATE! I call "customer solutions" after jabbering with several obviously indonesian people I snapped and begged for a manager. Sure as **** the overages were nearly 90 bucks worth of "data" charges! I ******* snapped on this guy hard- phone back on- with a sympahtetic 50 dollar "service credit".. I'm out 30+ bucks on you assholes advice, thanks. So I cooled off and called cus. solutions back, requesting pricing for a unlimited data plan. 39.99 a month was what I was told to use my phone as a modem- if I do not buy that plan- which is on top of my 60 a month voice services, data will cost a harsh .02 cents per kb. I'm no expert but I think that puts a 800x600 jpeg at like 5 bucks.... So now what? I don't forsee myself paying an extra 40 bucks monthly to casually check my email or run msn messenger in the car.... I hate sprint pcs with such passion, I have been a customer for over 5 years and this is not the first time they have run the .02/kb blues on me... anyone thinking class action on sprint def. pm me- I'll sign it. Any sprint reps like to fix me up before I start investing more of my ample free time telling the true horror of a long term sprint user? Why the **** can't I use my minutes for data? I bet it's cheaper than voice to use- it's just that the average joe doesnt need it so they bend you over good on it. I'm pointing a service rep to this thread I hope no one cares. I want answers and the sweat shop immigrants who speak broken english at sprints customer solutions cannot seem to address them properly. This inability to provide me an affordable data service for my mobile needs will cost them a customer if it is not remedied immediately- I am not afraid to check the market. I'm quite positive that someone has an unlimited data plan for less than 40 dollars monthly. I'll put a direct wav dish on my hood for that cost. I am so ****ed I'd like to go one on one with the ceo of sprint in a no holds barred grudge match in which I would bloody his/her eyes with my phone and then shove it so far up thier *** that they sneeze my phone book entries.... this forum needs a disgruntled sprint user thread stickied for ppl like me to vent....

If you ask nicely via email and give a good reason (like you have been a loyal sprint customer and will resign your 2 year contract) sprint will give you free vision. If you are nice. Yelling and *****ing about it doesn't get on their good side though...
I recomend reading up on sprintusers forums, specifically the thread titled Apparently now is the time to ask for discounts and free stuff.
You can use normal vision as a modem without any difficulty, to sprint it looks just the same as your phone usage (unless you download stuff from bittorrent or something that a phone obviousally cant and shouldnt do). I hear some of the newer phones report if you are on vision or not, if that is the case youll get a text message saying you need a modem plan.
I pay $35 a month for my entire bill, and have a broadband enabled pda that I can tether to computers without issue

..whew. I handled it. sorry for the several ugly threats and swears in my above posts- I get mad when I get ripped off and or flush money down the toilet. Anyway- I got the unlimited vision plan after a little whining to sprint again I'm still out the 30 bucks, they "cannot" remove that apperantly. So the moral: Be sure you have vision on your plan- don't think you do- be sure you do! (you'll know soon enough if you dont and use it for a modem!) Also if you add vision you have to wait until the next invoice cycle b4 it is activated... the wait is on, good thing this happened at the end of the month. The 2 cents per kilobyte is still class action material IMHO- imagine how much cash they have racked up with that scheme. This would apply to a person who had a web ready phone but no vision on their plan- lets say jimmy the toddler grabs mommies phone, connects to web (1 button push on my t608) and then mashes buttons for a half hour. that poor lady is now screwed into paying .02 per kilobyte as well. they are a huge company- if they wanted to block web access to non vision plan holders I imagine it would be an easy feat. they set this system up to mislead and rip people off and that is wrong. I will continue to use sprint for the immediate future while I price new phone eqipment/plans for my company.

Got my Merlin S620 card and refusing to purchase it for 300 because I have a contract ( love the way they punish good members ) I purchased it on ebay for 130. Connected it up called sprint got the service then the test drive.
This will go in my car with no doubt I peaked download at 760k a second last night and uploading about about 140k very nice indeed even with low signal at times very pleased 60 bucks a month is a much but I have a laptop so the ability to have access anywhere at all very nice indeed.
Worth it in my book.

Thats not a terribly bad deal if you use the lappy alot or exclusively- I'm using my setup about 30-60 minutes a month and customer service was telling me I had to buy one of the two business data plans, probably the same plan as you have- one was 40 dollars for 40 megabytes(rip off considering if your windows xp auto updates are on- there goes 20+ of your mb in one day) or 60 bucks unlimited(better but still way too expensive). Thats more than I pay for fast wifi access monthly at my residence- I can download their 40 mb in like 10 minutes at home- I just use the mobile to check email and what not- essentially the same stuff I'd do with the actual handset on vision web- I just want the data on my xenarc lcd where I can see it! If after the vision plan is active they still charge me for data I will not only snap and verbally defame sprint by any means but will park in front of local sprint store in gorilla suit with megaphone shouting obscene things into the air like a raving lunatic. "Sprint pcs put a chip in my brain! Theres no such thing as nights and weekends- are you people blind? Jesus told me PCS stands for Punish Customers Severely" If I tallied all the money I have poured into that shoddy operation (sprint)over the last five years- three of which were multiple business line years- I would surely projectile vomit. Let the man check his damn email how he pleases- I don't want to read it off your tiny handset anymore!

OK I did not read most of the post on this thread but to clear a few things up. Using the sprint Power vision data plan which starts at 15$ a month will not let you do data conection via a phone. They will track and charge you per Kb. Even if you go for the 20$ or the 25$ power vision package it works the same way. There is no resson of using this on a non power vision phone since the speeds are bellow dial up. power vision is about the speed of DSL. There is package for phone as a modem which lets u use it all you want, but it drains your phone battery like crazy. The Air card is not like 300$ like some one said before its $79.99 I think or something in that area with a 2 year "advantage agrement" the service service is around $60 if I rember corectly. And yes if any one wants it PM me ill explain how i know so much about this lol

Some people are ok with 14.4 speeds, and the majority of 14.4 phones don't report if they are tethered as a modem. For example, my primary reason to have internet in my car is to upload webcam shots of me driving to the net and to upload gps coordinates, and for those purposes 14.4 works just fine
As far as multimedia (streaming music) you need powervision.

My sierra wireless card (1xrtt) streams music fine as long as the stream is 96K or less. I even stream orb to my car no problem. Then again I've had three years to tweak the hell out of it.

****ers charged me again! same ****, .02 cents a kb, totalling over a hundred bucks this time and costing me days without a phone. I have finally figured this QUAGMIRE BULL**** SPRINT INTERNET out and heres the skinny: the aircard technology and the tech in my ericcson t608 is equivalent. Not in reality but to sprint. They have now stated the only way to use my phone as a modem is to buy the plan that goes with the aircard, a business data plan, and I can use it all day long assuming as I get the unlimited one for 59.99. It is clear to me now. I am already capable of internet connection, at .02 cents a kilobyte. To get rid of .02 per kilobyte I must buy business data plan. (or take my dollars eleswhere)

Got a new theory: Following up from the guy that says a phone that has been disabled because the service is unpaid, and reading on sprintusers for a bit, I think that you can get a cellphone, add it to your plan, then report it lost and it will be in that activated but unusable state where you can still tether it. If you can't tether then you just need to switch some code specifying what user is signing onto data services in your phone to an active phone, and you will have a sprint cellphone that can tether on data without being on any plan.
Just a theory. Mods, feel free to delete if this sounds too borderline illegal... (edited for typo)

QUESTION, carputer and sprint pc card
ok so i purchased the sprint pcmcia card for my lappy and it works awesome, i used to get 115kbits off of my celly with the data cable but the initial lag sucked so it was alright for downloads but the web worked great in the beginning but then dwindles, and i was never charged per kb, i paid 5$ month for unlinited vision.
.
.
anyways, i want to use my pc card for my carputer and lappy but i dont have a pci slot in the carputer so can not install a pc card adapter...my question is:
CAN I BUY A USB TO PC CARD ADAPTER...not a usb hub but soemthing similar to the pci adapter but using usb????????
any other ideas??

You could get a cheap laptop set up and use it as a router. Wouldn't have to be anything special, a 166 mhz compy with 4 gb of space and 64 mb of ram would do. Make it run windows 2000 and do internet connection sharing.
But... that is overkill
BTW your question is off topic, this thread is specifically about connecting to and using the internet, not hardware compatability issues
