Cell Phone Communications

Im gonna search, so hold your flame!

How many of us have added cellular communication to our CarPC's?

Im looking at using a prepaid cell phone to act as a modem for my PC and was wondering how successful this will be. Specifically, I have a RAS server I can call at any time. It even has an 888 number associated with it. I want to surf the net, get email, basic stuff. Bandwidth isn't so critical, im not going to be downloading porn with it. (at least not much) I was wondering if anyone here has done this on a permanent basis. Anyone using a USB connection for their phone? Or is serial my only option. What service has the best bandwidth available and has anyone in dallas, san antonio, houston done this already?

thank you for your support. I'll go search now.

Peter

How much are you planning on paying each month, as it would probably be cheaper for you just to get a t-mobile data plan at 29.99. GPRS is not the fastest service around, but you should get speeds typical of 30-50k (33.6-56k) modem speeds.

I was thinking that a prepaid phone would be cool cus I aint gonna use it that much. 33.6 should be fine for what I want it for. What plan did you get for yours? I noticed your in texas also....which tmobile plan did you get?

I am not using t-mobile, as I have SprintPCS w/ Vision and a Sanyo 8100. I can use my phone as a modem on Sprint and get data rates on average of about 100-120k, but Sprint is starting to crack down on people who abuse the vision service, so I do not recommend it. Not to mention I get weather and animated radar on my cell phone which is what I primarily use it for.

As far as t-mobile, if you have existing service you can get unlimited data added for 19.99 a month.

Let me know if you need anything else, as I am pretty well versed in this. (Telecom Manager/Engineer)

Don't expect to get 33.6 out of a pay per month phone.

As do I. I've been doing it for a few years now.

Have you seen on sprintusers.com where sprint is starting to crack down on those who abuse vision in this manner and removing their access?

Yeah. I don't abuse it like some of the other people. E-mail once in a great while maybe weather but not much more than that. I've been reading about the canceling on g3download.com for a while now.
