Wireless network speed

OK, I have a Linksys router on my home PC.

And a Linksys USB adapter in the car.

When I establish a network connection between my home and car, I'm only getting a speed of 1.0 mbps in the car.

Are the USB's on a M10K highspeed???

1. how far away from the AP is your car's antenna?
2. is there anything in between the two like electrical wiring, steel doors, etc that may be causing interference?
3. are there any other devices that use the 2.4Ghz band operational while you are trying the link (microwaves, wireless cameras, cordless phones)?

Those will affect your throughput. You are at least gitting a link, which is a good sign.

The USB ports on the m10000 are USB2.0. WinMe does not natively support usb2.0, so you have to download the drivers here

1. The adapter in the car is about 6' away from the car radio antenna. The adapter in the car is about 50' away from the router in the house. (Note: Web pages download very quickly in the car.)

2. Router is in the house, car is in the driveway, (50'). No other devices operational.

3. No other devices operational.

Web access works fine and fast. Problems arise when I attempt to transfer files from home PC to car PC. Also, when I attempt to downlaod a program, (Mediacar) from the internet in the car, the connection keeps getting reset by the peer.

I'm thinking I just don't have everything configured properly. Any step by step how to's available for configuring? Remember, I'm not terribly literate on these configurations.

P.S. Forgot to mention that I updated OS on both computers to XP Pro.

The router may be set to a max speed of 1Mbps. In the wireless settings in the router setup, there is a max speed setting, a channel setting, etc. It is also possible that you're getting "noise" on that channel from something else. I've noticed that most APs default to like channel 6. You can try changing the channel you use and see if that helps.

ive heard that changing to channel 2 helps...i was on 6 and i changed to 2 and it did help according to the wireless LAN monitor.

this may be just rumor, but a very very knowledgable computer guru friend told me this

I live quite close to other people who have TV Room extenders for inhouse use that work on the 2.4 mhz range. I also use them and have seen big differences in speed and range when they are all on. I moved the frequencies as far apart as I could and this helped.

By default all new linksys wireless ap's are set to 1.0 mbps and need to be set to max in the wireless setup page

Well, I believe I have things functioning properly now with one exception. When I plug the adapter into the USB ports on my M10K, I get a message that says something to the effect of, "You have plugged a high speed USB device into a low speed USB port". Do I not have the USB ports set correctly on my M10K? I beleive I have all the current drivers from VIA.

do you have SP1 for XP and the latest updates? there is one update (thats not a critical update, methinks) that resolves this issue

There were some difficulties early on with XP and usb 2.0. The M10K has 2.0, and you havn't gotten it working yet. Do as wizard says and do all the updates. SP1 is supposed to be THE fix for all usb 2.0 issues.
