Network problems... tech support

Ok so heres the setup.

2 pc's hardwired to a netgear MR814v2 router (xp home)
1 carputer wirelessly through a usb 11mbps to the above router (xp Pro)

I setup the network for the new carputer and I get internet and all is well. Hardwired computers can see the carputer and navigate through its shared files.

HOWEVER,
When I am using the carputer, I can only see the main shared folders of the hardwired computers, and when i click on them, i get a no permission/network path does not exist error.

Any one have any clues on what to do with this.

when you look at my computer, do you see red "X's" through the icons that describe your drives? After you login.

what do you mean by user accounts?
I have my own, administration accounts.

And then i recently added the same account that i have on the carputer, to my hardwired computers(at the suggestion of someone else i was asking for help)

So i have:
My administrative account
the same account that is on the carputer.

None of them have passwords

i was curious how you were accessing each machine - since XP can be setup to run - to a point - without user accounts....

i was actually heading in the same direction of whomever suggested adding user names....

just for info, how exactly are you trying to access the shares from your carputer? are you mapping a drive, or browsing the network?

or....Have you setup permissions on those shares?,
are they indeed shared out?
Do you have to login to a domain or are you using a peer to peer configuration?

erg... I really dont know the answers to those questions. I can only tell you what i have done.

I went to set up a home or small office network, and went through all that customization, placing the carputer on the same network as the other 2 computers.
Then i went in and setup encryption on my router and the software on the carputer, and that all works.

I haven't setup permissions on the shares, i dont know how. I just stuck it on the network. And right click>shareing and security> share on this network.. and then typed the network name

if what i did above shared them out, then yes... i can see and navigate through shared folders between the original 2 hardwired computers.

it's set to infastructure, if thats what your asking. I don't login.

this is the actual error

\\Exavier\myshared is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network rescource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

thanks for the help

one thing to consider trying is setting up a new share and seeing if you can access it from the carputer....

this really seems to be some type of permissions or share issue....

what i would try is creating a temporary shared folder on the c drive of either of the hardwired computers....

to do this, open up my computer or get to the c drive. create a new folder, call it whatever you want - say test.

then, right click on the new folder and choose sharing. then, choose share this folder...then, go to the carputer and try to map to the share...you can map a shared drive in any number of ways depending upon how you have XP configured. one way would be to go to network places or my computer, right click and choose map network drive....then, for the drive name type \\hardwired computer name\folder name...

you might have already tried this, but i'm just trying to determine if the carputer has the same rights as the other machines....

I just fixed a friend's PC that was having this problem. Make sure that you don't have the XP firewall turned on for either computer. Sometimes this is on by default. Your router should supply the firewall functions that you need, so you don't need the XP firewall.

In the properties for your Local Area connection, on the Advanced tab, uncheck the "Protect my computer...." box.

i got pretty much the same setup got a hub in the back seat connected to a nic shared to netgear 802.11b pci card.

I had to enable guest account on the carputer so other pc's on the hub can see and access my shared folders.

those are both good suggestions - i forgot about the firewall function in XP.....i'm not so sure about enabling the guest account - but, windows networking always has been smoke and mirrors....

thanks for the input guys, but it looks like i'm still stuck with the same problem.
I tried the guest account thing
and the xp firewall,
but still no luck.

remember, the problem is that i cant get into the shared folders of my home computers when i'm using my carputer. Everything else is fine
