Using laptop to access internet via K700
I have been following this thread hoping to find the answer to a question, with no such luck.
So, here I am posting this question:
I currently have my Sony Ericsson K700 used as a modem to connect my Gateway MX3215 via bluetooth. I have the two paired, and the connection is at around 115 kbps. But, when I want to browse the web on my laptop, the request times out. I am using the T-zones gprs, and it works perfectly on my phone when I want to browse the web using Opera mini.
Are there any internet settings on my laptop that I am missing, or need to set? If anybody has the answer, I would tremendously appreciate it!

From what I was able to figure out, the t-zones ($5.99/mo) thing only gets you wap pages, and only from yer phone - or at least that's as far as I've gotten. I was able to establish a dial-up connection (via bluetooth) using the phone from my carpc, but was unable to surf. I knew I was connected cuz I could do DNS queries, but that's about all the traffic I was able to generate.
Anyone else got any words of wisdom?
EDIT: I found plenty of resources on the 'net directing you to the modem's properties, instructing you to put in AT codes and extra connection params. This is not necessary. What I finally stumbled across were that a) IE doesn't work, while FF does... Go figure... b) just about anything is available through a proxy. I did find an article (don't remember where - gruups.com I think) that talked about putting in a proxy address, but because I have my own, I just opted to use that instead. Which prings me to point c) port 143 seems to go through just fine, while port 80 does not. So, I simply set my PC up to connect via BT to my phone over COM3, set my proxy server and port in FF's connection settings, and surfed.
Not blazing speed, but certainly respectable for checking traffic maps and stuff on the way home from the office in this God-forsaken mess we have here in Houston!

Cool, I appreciate the help! Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work out. I downloaded FF and set the connection setting to automatically detect the proxy. I did this because I don't know what my http proxy is. On your phone, did you have the option to use a proxy set to yes? I guess I'll do a little trial and error. Thanks Again!

After looking on T-Mobile's site for service plans, I have a question. Is 'T-MobileWeb' the same as 'T-Zones'?

N/M. I found out it is basically the same; just an increase in price and another name.

Ok, I just got it working on a similar setup. I have a SE W810i with Tmobile USA and the 5.99 TmobileWeb plan. However, when I called customer service they kept referring to it as Tzones. Anyway, I am able to use opera mini which I couldn't without the 5.99 plan...
First, go to Control Panel->Phone and Modem and select your bluetooth modem properties. There is a field that you can type in extra initialization string. Put in: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"
Next, in IE or FF, go to properties and set up the proxy settings. Put the following in: 216.155.165.50 for address and 8080 for port. I found that automatically detecting the settings doesn't work. Also, remember to change it back if you're using WiFi or a direct ethernet connection.
Hope this helps!

Finally!
You are a king amongst KINGS! After uninstalling and reinstalling programs on my laptop, it's finally working and does so at fairly decent speeds. How is the W810i? I was thinking of upgrading, mainly because the ONLY FLAW in the K700i is the lack of memory upgrade. But 40MB will do...for now.
Thank You So Much!!!

I'm glad it helped. The W810i is great!! It is the only SE phone (that I know of) that has EDGE, so the internet is fast! Now, it doesn't seem fast when you're using the internet on the actual phone, BUT, when I use it to browse from my laptop, it is FAST!
I did a bandwidth test from cnn and got 150Kb/s! Now, admittedly, it's not the case all the time and it depends on cell traffic in the area, but that was my max speed so far.
Enjoy!

So I have a question and hopefully this is the right Thread to ask about this. I am currently using T-Mobile and I have an internet ready cell phone, the Motorola Ming A1200
Network Technology GSM 850/ 900 / 1800 / 1900
Hardware/Processor Intel PXA270
Email POP3, IMAP4, SMTP
GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots)
Java (J2ME) Yes ,MIDP 2.0
WAP Yes Ver 2.0
Platform / OS Linux
Browser xHTML, HTML
Among other features....
My question would be.... is there any way that i can use internet on my cell phone without the $30 Internet plan from T-Mobile? Either free internet access or a cheaper than $30???
Thank you in advance for your help

Just read my post #262 in this thread.
If you need help hooking it up with linux I can help you do that. However, I would suggest you get it working in Windows (using the info above) first.

What I think is pretty interesting I went thru the configuration with one of the T-Mobile representatives setting up my internet connection "profile" where I added that IP as my primary gateway and the WAP was the same one you mentioned here. After that I did a test and I went to a website. I called back t-mobile to find out how much would they charge if i accessed the internet without a plan and they told me that without the plan I wouldn't be able to connect to the internet..... guess what? I am able to connect without any internet or tzone plan. I have called T-Mobile and also checked online for any extra charges for accessing the internet and i have $0 charges, so I guess I am using it for free after all.

God how I would love to get this working. I have to computer paired with the phone, and it is recognising it as a modem (Samsung t809), but I have no idea where to go from here. I have configured the extra settings that alimh was talking about (AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"), and set up the proxy in IE. I just have no idea what number to put in to dial or what user name and password to use. Anyone?
Edit, I got it working. It's slow as hell (Only a few bytes per second), but it is connecting.

T-Mobile RAZR V3 and WAP
After just upgrading from an old V60 on T-Mobile to a RAZR V3 (I think it's a V3 with V3r software), I came upon these posts and learned that the WAP access (I didn't even realized I had until updating my plan) could get me free wireless acess on my laptop using the V3 as a modem. Thanks for the info!
Two questions that I haven't seen answered (or missed) are:
Can I download files (e.g. .exe, .mpg, .jar files or others) to my laptop while connected to GPRS or just surf?
Can I browse the web outside of T-zones on my V3 itself without a laptop and without the MobileWeb plan (I can't seem to finde any WAP settings in the menu)?
Either way, this feature has been handy for checking e-mail, news, traffic from Web-Sites while on the road (getting about a 33.6 K real-world connection despite the connections stating faster). I haven't got my bill yet on the new plan....so, I hope to goodness you guys are right about the "free" access. :-)

Correct Settings?
Quote:
I found the following settings on my phone
Internet settings - internet profiles - t-zones gprs - connect using - T-Zones
[1]T-zones
[2]Picture Messaging
[3]PS Account 3
[4]PS Account 4
[5]PS Account 5
- Use Proxy Yes
- Proxy address - 216.155.165.050
Streaming settings - connect using - T-Zones
[1]T-zones
[2]Picture Messaging
[3]PS Account 3
[4]PS Account 4
[5]PS Account 5
- Use Proxy - No
- Proxy address - Blank
Some Questions - Does DUN depend on the settings above?
- Is there specific number to dial to get edge connection? (I'm from Los Angeles area)
I played around with the following phone numbers, and although they all work, I have not figured out what differences the last numeric digit makes.
*99***1#
*99***2#
*99***3#
*99***4#
*99***5#
I was able to browse internet without putting proxy settings into Internet explorer LAN options.
What are the best settings for best throughput?
