And my connection is about 41kbit/s with 2-3 seconds of latency.

Also, I cannot connect to my corporate email via Outlook running in http mode to connect to the server. Apparently that's just Outlook not handling the very high latency (and potentially packet loss) well. I've had no such issues over a 56k modem...

But general web browsing to normal web sites works just fine. I posted some stuff to www.mp3car.com earlier using my phone.

Thanks for the quick reply!!!!

However I am using a Sony Ericcson. Will easyGPRS work with this? And where can I download easyGPRS?

actually, i can get to corp outlook web access perfectly. We're using exchange 2003 which has much better performance optimizations IMHO. I dunno if that makes a difference?

Oh yeah, sorry, forgot to add: RPC over http for outlook also works well for me.

We're using 2003 too. I tried both rpc over http and outlook web access. The former never downloads any new mail (although I did manage to coax it into sending a few short test mails). The latter ends up not showing all the sub-frames. Glad to know it's working for someone.

How long does rpc over http take to connect and start downloading actual data for you?

no need

use bluetooth w/ Widcomm drivers
when the phone is recognized by computer, it will setup any possible features.
Sony ericssons work great ( T610,T616,&637 ) ..
Mines a T610 and I just have it dial the phone ( *99***3# ) which connects to the internet.
I set " Internet Preferences " on the computer ( both IE & Firefox linked ) to use a proxy server with IP & Port 8080

simple, no other software needed

your problems accessing corporate e-mails deal with the SMTP & PoP servers using ports other than 8080. I believe they use port 70 or something.

If they have a web interface, those should work fine.

rpc over http is exactly what it says - all communication is over http and it does use any proxies you may have configured in IE.

It is not smtp or pop.

I'm tempted to get a BT phone so that:
1. I don't have to tether the phone to allow the PC to get internet access through it.
2. I can use the PC as a hands free kit by adding an array microphone I have lying around / using the car speakers.

For the latter - have you tried that and if so, have you found a way to prevent it automatically answering?

arathranar,

RPC over http starts retreiving new e-mail in about 30 - 45 seconds. What's impressive is that i'm using news gator to retreive RSS feeds on my desktop at home and it still manages to retrieve and sync all those feeds fairly quickly on remote machines (laptop or carputer). AFAIK, we don't have any special configuration options either... wish I could figure out what the problem was...

PC as a hands free kit is a cool idea, but just remember that since most phones don't support more than one BT connection at a time, you can't use any phone software (e.g. zorro's phone control) simultaneously.

EDIT: Oh yeah, when I use widcomm 4 to handle phone calls, it works really well. If you have the PC setup as a voice gateway, it'll popup a ballon on the bottom right notifying you of whoever is calling as well as give you verbal notification via the SAPI engine (if its installed). What happens then is you just click on the ballon and it'll give you an option to either accept or decline the phone call.

The whole process works well, but as you can imagine, its quite tedious to do in the car, so I haven't tried it.

Unfortunately, zorro mentioned that the documentation for widcomm's SDK was too expensive to purchase, so we probably won't be seeing a totally integrated solution anytime soon.

Can you go to http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and see what speed connection you get and what latency? I'd love to know why you have success and I don't. I'd love to be able to get it working.

Okidoki, so I ran 5 trials and here are the results i got:

36 kbit/sec (50k)
36 kbit/sec (100k)
39 kbit/sec (100k)
41 kbit/sec (100k)
28 kbit/sec (200k)

respectively, i got the following latency results:
1.336s
1.421s
1.429s
1.320s
1.504s

My phone is an SE K700i and I'm in a big convention hall in mandalay bay as I type this on my laptop. Various file sizes were used.

Oh yeah, see above edit re: PC as bluetooth headset if ya missed it.

Looks like you get about the same speed but half the latency I do. That may be why Outlook never quite gets properly connected. sigh.

what's cool about rpc over http is that i have the option to detect connection speed and react accordingly (download full e-mails vs. download headers only). You might wanna see if that works for you; the option is under account setup.

Even when i don't have that option applied though, e-mail still works nonetheless. So, I'm not certain if it'll help resolve your situation.

hrm... weird... you're right, sounds like a latency issue.

Wonder what's causing that, bad area or reception?
