does NetStumbler actually CONNECT to access points?

I can't actually connect to an access point by double clicking the AP in the list. I have to close ns and then open my network cards litle utility and then connect to the network because aparently they don't like to run at the same time. I'm using NDIS 5.1

is there some way it will actually connect to the network for you? or am i looking at the wrong program? i want a program that will list all the APs i've picked up and if i want, i can double click on it or something and it automatically connects me.

also is there some way to dump the acess points you pick up into a POI list or something for either dest 3 or iguidance 2?

no, netstumbler just detects access points, you cant actually connect to them, but thats a good idea...hahah.

yes, you can get a script that runs netstumbler and mappoint and pulls info off gps and plots it in your mappoint.

I have a Linksys WUSB11 in my car... there is no Linksys program to manage networks, so I have to use Windows.

Are there any custom programs that anyone knows about?

When a device gets put into promiscuous mode, the driver is limited to receive only (Rx). The driver sets a fake MAC address and channel hops looking for any raw 802.11x frames it sees. Netstumbler, like other wireless sniffing apps, places the card into promiscuous mode. Taking it out of promiscuous mode and putting it back into infrastructure or Adhoc sometimes leaves the card in an unknown state (Older Cisco drivers forced me to pull out and push back in my card to reset itself, and I've had the same issues with my built-in prism2.5 chipset). Lots of people had difficulty with this, so many app writers left that part up to the user.

I'm not saying it's not improved since then...I'm just giving a little background into the situation.

I'd use Window's software to control what AP you are connecting to. Just click "use this AP even though it's not secure" and be off and running. It's not that bad, really.

Right. Promiscuous mode = Rx only. Netstumbler puts your card into a receive only mode so that it can channel hop and decipher raw frames. When you close NS, it should safely return your card to infrastructure or adhoc mode.

XP's built in wireless connection app is pretty good, actually. It will show all the WEP and non-WEP APs within range and connecting is as simple as agreeing to connect to an insecure AP.

Obviously, NS in its current form cannot be running while you are trying to connect. I think what the original poster is asking for, is a smarter NS that will take itself out of promisc mode and auto connect to that network. That way, he can drive around with NS in the background and connect to any given AP with a double-click without using XP's built in app.

indeed I have been looking into WMI on MSDN. It's gonna be very tough to write this software if I can pull it off! And i'm gonna whine to the NS developer!

Netstumbler specifically DOES NOT connect to APs because that's against the law. Windows XP SP2 has a very good built-in WiFi. It spits out a list SSIDs (or something) and you pick.
