Heh. When you're connected, do you see a big "1X" at the top of your phone's screen, or an "EV"?

I know I know, keeping this old post going. Recently I bought an ebay data cable just to see if this works on my laptop and I'll be danged, internet is actually rather quick at times. You have to disable Com port 4 on my setup for some reason. But nonetheless, I am only using anytime minutes when I am on peak which is no big deal because my wifee somehow got us 1400 anytime minutes in addition to free nights and weekend. This is the cord that I used for my LG VX6100 which can be found on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1
This cord also recharges the phone while its plugged in, so now I can recharge through my truck's USB ports just like I do with my Nintendo DS. One last thing, not to jump too far off topic, but a good free mobile phone management software that I have found (lets you transfer ringtones to your phone!), is "Bitpim" and I have created my own ringtones using MP3s using "Audacity."

There is the 1X at the top. Well after a year and a half, i finally lost my phone Friday night. I'm looking at buying a Samsung SCH-a930. It's a newer phone, so i'm guessing i'll need to reenable access like mentioned above, correct?

Is this still functioning as of 10/6/06? I have a Verison LG Model number VX3200 . I just want to make sure this is still working before I go buy the cable.
I have a 1x on my phone, and I'd be content with dialup speeds. All I want is to update weather and occasional IM when I'm bored in a parking lot .

Anyone using this with a ppc 6600? It has EVDO capability. Does that need to be/can that be disabled to use the minutes only ability? It seems like some ppl are saying Verizon changed it so that you definetly can't do this anymore but then others say it is still working.
If I attempt this I would like to make sure that I am not being charged per kilobyte. However, my bill is sent to another address. How can I check to see if I am being charged data rates without the bill?
Thanks

FYI, just got a SCH-a930. If you want to use Bluetooth instead of the USB cable to get internet on your PC, here's what you do:
1. Go to MENU
2. Select SETTINGS & TOOLS
3. Press #
4. Enter all zeros for the password
5. Press 4 to select Port Map
6. Press 1 to select DS (DATA)
7. Press 3 to select BLUETOOTH
You should now be able to use your phone as a bluetooth modem. When I paired my a930 to my Mac using the bluetooth system preferences panel, at first it told me there were no services for me to configure. After I turned this on I was able to configure it as a modem.
If you want to switch back to using the USB cable, just go back to the menu above and press 2 to select USB.

Search howardforums for locking 1x data. It'll disable EVDO and just use minutes.

Got my cable today, connected it to my vx3200 and.... NOTHING . My lap top doesn't even recognize the device I jammed into it's USB port. No promp no "bluup" nothing. How depressing. Maybe that's what I get for buying the $5.00 cable off eBay .

You probably need to go under your hardware settings and ask the computer to search for any new devices. Also, you'll have to download drivers for your phone in order for your computer to recognize it as a modem.

Important Information about NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess services
Subject to terms and conditions of Customer Agreement. Rates based on use of phone as programmed by Verizon Wireless. We may change your phone software over the air without notice. Digital service and features not available in all areas. Service can be intercepted by individuals with certain equipment. Security limitations apply. Rates do not apply to credit card or operator assistance calls, which may be required in certain areas. Usage is rounded to next full minute, so allowance may vary. Charges begin when you press "SEND" or "CONNECT" button, or upon connection to system. On incoming calls, charges may begin prior to device ringing and before you press "SEND" to receive call. Charges end when disconnected from system, which may be a few seconds after you press "END" or "DISCONNECT" button. Calls to certain fax/data modems incur charges, though it may sound as if call was unanswered. Charges apply on calls to toll-free numbers. NationalAccess data session automatically terminates after 5 minutes of inactivity, NationalAccess data session automatically terminates after 24 hours of activity. Data session is inactive when no data is being transferred. Data session may seem inactive while data is actively being transferred to device, or may seem active when it is actually cached and not transferring data. You MUST press or click "END" or "DISCONNECT" button to ensure that session disconnects and charges cease. NationalAccess data session may automatically reinitiate without you pressing or clicking "SEND" or "Connect" button if you have not terminated your session by pressing or clicking "END" or "Disconnect" button. You may be able to send or receive voice call when NationalAccess data session is inactive. When this occurs, charges apply simultaneously for voice call in accordance with Calling Plan. Toll, taxes and surcharges, including Federal Universal Service and Regulatory Fee resulting from our costs of Federal Government assessments, apply and are in addition to rate set forth in Calling Plan. Billing, shipping, and end-user address must be within Verizon Wireless licensed and service area where wireless device number is issued. Verizon Wireless calling areas, rates, agreement provisions, procedures, and policies are subject to change as specified in Customer Agreement. You are responsible for maintaining virus protection software when accessing a Verizon Wireless data service.
Unlimited NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess:
Unlimited NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess data sessions may be used with wireless devices for following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) e-mail; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, e-mail and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force and field service automation). Unlimited NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess cannot be used with server devices or with host computer applications. Examples of such prohibited uses include, without limitation, web camera posts or broadcasts, continuous jpeg file transfers, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions or any other machine-to-machine applications. Such data sessions cannot be used as substitute for private lines or frame relay connections. "Always On" capabilities and static Internet Protocol addresses are not available. We reserve right to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone who uses NationalAccess in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. We also reserve right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement.
NationalAccess Megabyte Plans:
Megabyte allowance and charges for kilobytes over the monthly allowance apply to NationalAccess data usage; all other usage charged in accordance with calling plan. NationalAccess data usage is rounded to next full kilobyte at end of each billing cycle. Only total of kilobytes transmitted above allowance each billing cycle may appear on bill. You are responsible for all charges, including all data sent and received and "overhead" whether or not you or your recipients actually receive the data. Overhead is all data that is in addition to user-transmitted data, such as control, operational and routing instructions, error-checking characters as well as retransmissions of user-data messages that are received in error. Any unused portion of the megabyte allowance is lost. NationalAccess data-capable tri-mode equipment with updated software is required. Customers must dial *228 to activate on or migrate to the NationalAccess Megabyte Calling Plans and to update their PRL to receive proper notification. Equipment will not indicate kilobyte usage.
NationalAccess Calling Plans:
Unused airtime minutes are lost. Airtime minutes are not transferable. You will see 777-000-0001 in dialed digits column of bill for NationalAccess data sessions. NationalAccess data session automatically terminates after 5 minutes of inactivity. During data session, if you travel outside NationalAccess area, or connection is otherwise unavailable, but you continue with session after returning within five minutes, you will be billed for entire length of data session.

I have verizon and a motorola q. This worked as of 12/20/06 but a few day later it does not work anymore. I get an error saying that my password and username are not authorized - Incorrect login information. I have checked this a hundred times to make sure it is correct and it is. I dropped wireless sync a while ago, would that have anything to do with it. Is wireless sync required for this or is verizon blocking this out and making you get a data plan. I also never had a data plan, I had the pay per KB but it worked fine before.
Any information is helpful, thank you

Moto phones?
Anyone have any experience trying the Motorola V3 Razor?
Or the V325?
I'm using a Samsung A-670 now with pretty good speed much of the time,
but it frequently will disconnect. Sometimes it will drop tehe speed to almost nothing, but that may be due to limitted bandwidth in our rural area.
But, it is time for a new phone and I'm wondering if these are going to be in the running.
