Are you still only being charged minutes? I have a LG VX6100 and just got a cable/software disc. I connected to Netzero using a StarTac several years ago (it was very slow) and hope to connect to Verizon using the vzw3g setup.

I'm going to offer some information as someone who used to work in the data department for the cell phone companies......maybe it's already been posted but I'm nice enough to type this out so don't get mad.

For Verizon, using the #777 connection will only work if you have a profile in the company's LDAP server authentication program. And this doesn't happen until you sign up for their data service......either the blackberry/PDA/aircard service or even just the cheap regular service you can get to use your cell phone as a modem. Now once you get this profile it's never deleted so the following month if you remove the feature from your account, you still have the LDAP profile. The problem is it's disabled so you shouldn't be able to use it. But who knows.
Now for the QNC, this stands for Quick Net Connect and allows you to use your phone as a modem but charges you based on time as opposed to above which is charged by data. That's why it APPEARS to be free, because you're using your minutes from your bucket. And chances are you have unlimited minutes for nights and weekends. You can either dial #777 with QNC as your parameters or just dial #888 and leave the parameters blank.....either way will do it.

As for IDEN phones, these work a bit differently and the server software they're using to accept the input strings has a huge bug......it allows you to pass statements to the parser via the String. So if you set your dialout number for your internet connection as s=2 and leave the parameters blank, it'll access the internet and you'll never get a bill. Some people might be thinking....."Ya, sure......did you hear that from a friend of a friend?" Well.....no......I used to work there. I was responsible for testing this, which I did, and it worked. So good luck, hopefully the glitch isn't limited to the one company.

Excellent information. It seems I will need to connect QNC. Is connecting QNC better different than just dialing an access number to connect to say, Netzero? Is QNC used to connect to the Verizon network.

I appreciate your help and hope you will excuse my ignorance.

A definite newb but thought I'd chime in. I'm at the tail end of my 2 year Verizon contract, and have been connecting the laptop via both USB cable & BlueTooth while on the road, since pretty much the second day.

My tale: LG VX8100 with DUN capability unblocked on the phone as brought out earlier in the thread. No-name USB cable bought from eBay; works fine with BitPim & charges the phone while connected. Dialup connection on the laptop as stated earlier: "phone#@vzw3g.com" with "vzw" as password (both sans quotes).

Then, the "Mobile Web" service purchased at $5 per month - no, not for the lame VCast stuff, but to serve as a faux "data" plan. Next, and critically important: phone blocked from defaulting to EVDO; only 1x allowed. Why this? As I understand it, Verizon does track data usage under EVDO, as it is their intended service for data - and if you haven't bought their hugely expensive data plan and still utilize EVDO, they will indeed find you're out there & charge you their hugely expensive per-kb rates.

They do not, however, appear to worry that much about data usage under 1x, as it primarily supports the phone-centric Mobile Web and its lightweight data footprint. I have never been charged anything but minutes, under my 450 min/$49.95 plan. I'm tethered right now, being away from home, and it being Saturday. Speeds are averaging 115 kbps.

There are horror stories out there of people being hit with thousand dollar bills after using their phones as modems. But in the cases I've heard of, folks insisted on utilizing EVDO for the high speeds, and/or had been treating it as their primary means of connectivity. Neither of those things is particularly wise, and would quite understandably arouse the wrath of any service provider if discovered. If one is getting something for next to nothing, wisdom dictates one shouldn't flaunt it in the face of those who provide the opening. I use mine only when needed away from home, and only then when I can't access a wireless hot spot. I look at it as a gift. It's fast enough.

A final thought. Is this really, as they would likely believe, a misuse of their services? Arguable. Although the Mobile Web service may indeed be intended only for their concept of a mobile web - and not ours - they do not appear to have specifically forbidden broader data uses of the 1x network in the contract. It is the fallback network under their official data plans, after all.

Rather, it seems they have chosen to just block the DUN capabilities of their phones. However, we own the bloody things. If we can unblock what they block on technology we own, it's not illegal - it's just smart.

Is this trick no longer able to work? I tried to setup my Krzr for use as a modem. I managed to get a connection but when I open the web browser I'm getting a message that says I'm not authorized to use this device for dial-up networking. Is it because my phone defaults to EVDO, as the previous poster stated? I would love if I could get this to work without paying $50 for their tethering plan when I only want to use it occasionally. Any advice guys?

Well I limited mine to 1x not because it wouldn't connect on EVDO - actually it did - but because I had heard people were pushing their luck connecting that way. In other words, Verizon was watching.

I think the key for you is the same it was for me; unblocking DUN capability on the phone itself. Now I don't know much about the Razrs - I'm still using my old LG - but in my case all I had to do was use the "administrator" password for my model (found on HowardForums) to access the root menu on the phone and undo what Verizon had done, i.e. unlock dialup networking.

It seems like you'll need something called QPST, a Qualcomm utility for accessing the hidden configuration menus. There's an indication someone has it up on RapidShare, and I also found a "Hack the Razr" site ("it's your phone ... make it so"), which looks like it has the utility for download. I'm still connecting tethered, so it's still possible ... The only recurring problem I have is that when I'm connected to my own wireless router at home, every time a page is a little slow in loading the laptop throws up the DUN connection window and I have to cancel it out. Minor price to pay I think when I can have Google Maps up & running in the passenger seat while I'm heading cross country in the Triumph!

What you showed me did help a bit. I can now connect with my phone tethered, which is great. Now I just want to figure out how to keep it from defaulting to 1x. I don't want to get slammed with a huge bill.

Again, be really careful if you decide to attempt this stuff - messing up in the root configuration can render the phone useless.

These guys are interested in disabling EVDO because the phone constantly looking for it apparently drains the battery really quickly on the Razrs. But the result should be the same; the phone should stay on the 1x network even where EVDO is available.

I should also mention that I think vCast requires EVDO, so if you use that stuff, you may be losing your access to it. That's no big deal to me, but I guess it might be to some.

Final thought: As I said, I did subscribe to the "MobileWeb" service @ $5 per month. I don't know if it's necessary to connect, but it gives me an excuse for having data minutes show up if Verizon ever does check the details of my usage. It was my understanding - at the time, at least - that they couldn't tell the difference between MobileWeb and DUN use.

BLUTO....is the program you use called qualcomm? Just want to make sure I downloaded the correct software. Would you be able to give me some assistance in setting up the program? If I downloaded the correct software, I have no clue where to even begin with it. I installed the setup files....and I now have the following options....

and well there are a couple of others...but if I have the correct program then you already know the rest of what im looking at. Now I dunno exactly what kind of instructions you have but from what I downloaded there certainly are not any type of details instructions on how to use my verizon cell phone to get my laptop online. Please help. thanks!

And now I can get online with no problems. They are good step by step instructions. I had to use QPST_2.7 build 215. I tried an earlier version and it didn't work. All in all it works pretty good. A little slow, but good enough to check email when on the road and get weather updates.

You don't need the vzaccess manager. There's a bunch of info on how to do it in this thread. Here's the skinny:

-set up your internet connection to dial #777
username:##########@vzw3g.com (replace # with your phone number)
Password:vzw

Thats it, enjoy! I recomend reading up on defaulting to 1x and usage, as verizon could hit you with a monster bill or disable your service.

That's right. Now the screen has been updated to offer a way to buy a data plan! My free internet settup with my Razr V3m used to work perfectly, and now this is what I get, so i can only assume that Verizon finally shut the back door to this feature.
