self powered or bus powered for USB wifi adapter

I've searched, trust me, but haven't found an answer... if this is already posted, please point me towards it...

a self powered usb hub is always the way to go, if you can.. but I dont' want to rely on a 2nd dc ps. so it looks like the usb hub will have to remain bus powered. looking for comments on your experiences with self powered vs. bus powered usb hubs for use with a usb wifi adapter.

I like the new linksys portable WUSB54GP usb adapter (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper) because I can run the usb cable up the pillar and mount the wifi device near the roof and then pass a pigtail connector out the door to an external antenna on the roof. Minimize the pigtail length but still get the antenna on the roof.

Most posts indicate people are using the boxy linksys adapter not the portable adapter, any ideas why?

I don't have a linksys, but I've found that it works best connected directly to the PC. Any other way causes problems.
