I am still seriously considering buying an i450 for the car only. At $20/mo it may be worth it to have always-on internet in the car.

Questions to those that use it (asked before, but I'm taking an updated poll)

How much does it really cost?
What speeds to you really get (Wi-DEN)?
Have you used it with Google Earth?
Hav you used it with Sling-Player?
Does it auto connect when you start the car and stay connected untill you turn off the car?

1. It really costs $.20/day - going up shortly to $.35/day. So, about $11/month. As long as you don't touch any other features - voice, txt msg - that'll be the price.

2. I'm getting 10-20kpbs, with bursts in 50-60 range. my.yahoo loads in about 30 seconds, wunderground weather report is maybe 10-15 seconds, I "steer" away from more busy screens.

3. Yes on GE, but only very briefly. Connected via GPSGate plugin, was awesome for a few minutes, then something got hosed and I haven't figured out what the problem is. GE now runs like a pig, stuck on data point where it first got hosed, etc. I'd definitely consider GE a possibility with this setup, esp with some of the caching tools guys have put out here to help load commonly used images.

4. No idea what Sling Player is

5. Yes on autoconnect - I have the dialer in a startup folder, and I also have browser or other apps autodial in case the connection wasn't on.

Besides these questions, the biggest problem I've been having lately with i450 is the phone has been auto-shutting-off out of the blue - can't figure out why. Fully charged, and on charge cord, connected with good signal, etc, and it'll suddenly power off. I turn it back on, runs fine. Anybody have a clue on that, let me know. Minor nuisance.

One other problem I had, only twice so far, and briefly, was actually getting to internet resources once connected - phone was connected, had good signal, but couldn't locate any url's. Anyone else see that?

Sling Player is the video player to play back content streamed from a Slingbox. The Slingbox device is something you hook up to a TV or DVR to watch your home TV content from anywhere over the web.

I would image that with the bandwidth contraints of the Boost data service (and any other slow type of data service) the video would look horrible.

It works quite well with EVDO service though.

Yeah, I still don't understand the bandwidth. Do people get 5ish or 20ish with Wi-Den? 5 kbps will definatly not do Sling (nor GE very well, but good enough). 20 kbps may start looking ok (but at 20 kbps it shouldn't take my.yahoo [or anyother web page] 30 seconds to load???)

Maybe he meant 1-2kbps with bursts of 5-6? Even at 2kbps my.yahoo.com shouldn't take 30 seconds though!?!? I get 8-10kbps easy on my Sprint phone (non-EVDO). If Wi-DEN isn't as fast as that, maybe I'll stick to what I got. It's free anyway. It's just a pain to have to connect the phone to it's USB cable if I want net.

thats sounds closer to what i've got goin. But in all honesty its used in my car only to get updates for weather, traffic, n stuff like that. If i need to go browsing for something i use my verizon phone thats permanently mounted OR go with my verizon bluetooth connection

FWIW, I currently have Tmobile EDGE with WIFI hotspot use. With my Motorola V330, which is a class 8 EDGE device IIRC, I get consistent 90 to 120 kbps (thats kilobit) using the phone's built in bluetooth. I am grandfathered in my plan at $20/mo. for that. I think it runs $25/mo. now.

I am very tempted to get Sprints EVDO service, which is nice especially since they are currently upgrading to rev. A speeds. $50/mo. for unlimited isn't too bad, and I think I can rationalize that cost since I am dropping my landline at home.

I'm quoting the speed test results from http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1 which displays kbits/second.

I checked the math and it seems to square up - a 50kB file would be 400kb (50x8), which @20bps, would take 20 seconds (plus latency) - and that's about what I'm getting, pretty routinely.

#1 - You guys are aweful! I resisted this thread for months and lived with just plugging in whatever cdma modem I had while in the car. Yesterday I got a i450 from walmart, addicting or what

#2 - does anyone have the pinout for the 450? I cannot find a data cable anywhere and I am going on a trip monday and need internet so I can't wait for ebay. I tried modifying the connector on a v500 cable but I'm not getting any usb install dialog when I connect it. The best I could find was a i450 car charger from Target (no dollar stores had anything for an i series). I am going to try and swap the pin from the v500 cable over to the car charger cable. Is there a chip in the i450 cable? This page seems to indicate the i series are straight through? http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N...0_pinout.shtml

#3 - here's a site with some interesting stuff on getting a serial gps signal
http://www.blogcadre.com/blog/roboge...02_02_19_35_44

Thanks to PureDoom and everyone else for helping me spend money

#2 - so I transfered the pins from a V500 connector to the car charger I bought and used the pin orientation from PureDooms 415 pic (same as the v500 anyway) and tweaked some things on the locking lugs and it installed ok. Trying to get webjal running now.

I guess I was confusing b with B.

A 56k modem gets around 48kbps = 6kBps. My non-EVDO Sprint phone gets around 8-10kBps. If even WiDEN is slower than a 56k modem, I just lost a lot of interest .

The Boost solution is painfully slow, but it is very cheap - you get what you pay for.

It should work OK for things like downloading weather updates for your car-pc front end, but if you want to do any sort of significant websurfing and do things like streaming Internet music - other solutions are needed.

I just need it for location uploading and weather updates. I have BT 1x or EVDO with my main phone if needed.
