I am still seriously considering buying an i450 for the car only. At $20/mo it may be worth it to have always-on internet in the car.
Questions to those that use it (asked before, but I'm taking an updated poll)
How much does it really cost?
What speeds to you really get (Wi-DEN)?
Have you used it with Google Earth?
Hav you used it with Sling-Player?
Does it auto connect when you start the car and stay connected untill you turn off the car?
1. It really costs $.20/day - going up shortly to $.35/day. So, about $11/month. As long as you don't touch any other features - voice, txt msg - that'll be the price.
2. I'm getting 10-20kpbs, with bursts in 50-60 range. my.yahoo loads in about 30 seconds, wunderground weather report is maybe 10-15 seconds, I "steer" away from more busy screens.
3. Yes on GE, but only very briefly. Connected via GPSGate plugin, was awesome for a few minutes, then something got hosed and I haven't figured out what the problem is. GE now runs like a pig, stuck on data point where it first got hosed, etc. I'd definitely consider GE a possibility with this setup, esp with some of the caching tools guys have put out here to help load commonly used images.
4. No idea what Sling Player is
5. Yes on autoconnect - I have the dialer in a startup folder, and I also have browser or other apps autodial in case the connection wasn't on.
Besides these questions, the biggest problem I've been having lately with i450 is the phone has been auto-shutting-off out of the blue - can't figure out why. Fully charged, and on charge cord, connected with good signal, etc, and it'll suddenly power off. I turn it back on, runs fine. Anybody have a clue on that, let me know. Minor nuisance.
One other problem I had, only twice so far, and briefly, was actually getting to internet resources once connected - phone was connected, had good signal, but couldn't locate any url's. Anyone else see that?
