Thanks, Have to do some more digging. I could never get my sprint BT phone working with DUN.
For the money sounds great. Hope I can use it.

Probably... I'm not sure though.....

I'm thinking about doing this. It's really $6/mo? I have free I-NET through my Sprint phone right now, but I have to plug in a USB cable and incomming calls go to voice-mail. I'd rather have a dedicated line for car I-NET if it is only $6/mo.

and I'm only half a beat behind you!
My system is just going in and I'm thinking that this is a heckofan easy way to get 'Net access in the truck.
Now if only I can find a single DIN mounting solution for a Xenarc 7"! (yeah, I know about the one box that no one seems to be able to get... ARGH!)

Raf,
Hows reception of the phone so far? Where do you place it? Maybe if its poor or sub-par we can find away to add an external antenna to it. I am searchin ebay and will be getting one soon.

One more question for you. The GPS, does that show up as a seperate device?

It doesn't show up at all, unless you use a serial cable and enable it, or are accessing it from a java applet on the phone. However, you can run a java applet while using DUN, so I think I could write software to send the NEMA string over the DUN connection as a TCPIP stream. Its on my todo list.
I cant figure out how you could use gps and DUN over serial at the same time, so I can only assume you can't and its one or the other. I don't have a serial cable, and I welcome someone to prove me wrong.

Really, $6/mo. Ive spent $7 so far and ive been using this for just over a month, and ive downloaded at least 50 MB of data off of it. (traffic updates, emails, software, ect). Of course I switch over to sprint whenever I need heavy bandwidth, but unless I am getting podcasts iDen works just fine.
Sorry Shotgun, was fixing my buddies xbox today and didn't get a chance to try DUN under linux, I'll get back to you in a few days.

I would say on a scale of 1-10, the phone gets about a 7.5... I have perfect reception @ home, but around town there are a couple of dead spots. Though I usually have atleast 2-3 bars out of 5.
Peace,
Rafster
P.S. You could always get something like this to help you out... http://www.cell-phone-accessories.co...l-booster.html

No worries. Appreciate you checking it out. Do you think this is fast enough for using with Google Earth at fairly low resoution? That's 90% of what I want it for.

It should be fast enough. Google Earth works fairly well on a 2400-bps modem . You don't need much speed especially once you've built up your cache a bit.

Cool. That's primarily what I want it for (GPS). Truth be told, I'm almost always within a few miles of my house. For other stuff, I can pull near my back and just get on my AP.
Have you actually tried that on a 2400bps? I think the last time I was traveling at those speeds was my circa 1990.

No, not a real 2400bps, but in remote areas with poor signal my Sprint phone probably dips to around that. The Sprint phone can go as fast as 2x a 56k modem at times too. That stuff doesn't really affect GE that much though unless you change the zoom level or are traveling above a couple 100 MPH . Same goes for weather downloads, GPS log uploads, and most other things you doo often with a CarPC. Speed is not really nessasary for typical CarPC use (unless you are trying to stream media or just really can't stand having to wait a few seconds for your Google Local search results).
