Cingular PDANet via bluetooth

These instructions are specific to a Tre650, but the basics should be applicable to any other GPRS device on Cingular. It is required that you have a PDANet plan enabled for any of this to work, obviously.

This also doesn't go into installation of bluetooth drivers for specific dongles. My dongle is a cheapie generic dongle I got from Fry's that uses the BlueSoleil drivers. I can likely help you with that, but if you use WidComm or some other bluetooth stack, I can't help you.

Setting up the handset
  • On the handset, press and hold the red power button to activate the "phone" feature.
  • Tap on the Bluetooth icon to the left of the signal strength icon.
  • Tap to select On in the "Bluetooth:" field.
  • Tap to select Yes in the "Discoverable:" field.
  • Tap to select On in the "Dial-up Networking" field.
  • When the "Bluetooth Warning" dialog box appears, tap OK.
Setting up the connection
  • On the PC, double click on the My Bluetooth Places icon from the desktop.
  • An Initial "Bluetooth Configuration Wizard" window will appear, click on Next to continue.
  • In the "Computer name" field, type in a name for the PC.
  • From the "Computer type" drop down menu, click to select Personal Computer or Laptop Computer.
  • Click on Next.
  • Click on Next again.
  • Ensure Dial-up Networking is checked from the list of services.
  • Click on Next.
  • Once the software is installed, click on Skip.
  • Click on Finish.
  • Double click on the My Bluetooth Places icon from the desktop.
  • Click on View devices in range, or Search for devices in range.
  • Right click on the icon representing the handset, and click on Pair Device.
  • Type in a "numerical pin code (example 1234)" in the "Bluetooth PIN Code" field, and then click on OK.
  • On the handset, a "Bluetooth Security dialog box" will appear.
  • In the "Enter passkey" field, type the same number typed on the PC, and tap on OK.
  • On the PC, return to My Bluetooth Places.
  • Right click on the icon representing the handset and click on Discover Available Services.
  • Double click on the Dial-up networking icon.
  • When the connection window opens, click on Cancel, and close all applications.
  • Click on Start Settings Control Panel and double click on Phone and Modem Options.
  • Click on the Modems tab.
  • Click once on the Bluetooth Modem and click on Properties.
  • Click on the Advanced tab.
  • Type AT+cgdcont=1,IP,isp.cingular into the "Extra initialization commands:" field.
  • Click on OK.
Making the connection
  • On the PC, return to My Bluetooth Places.
  • Click on View devices in range.
  • Right click on the icon representing the handset and click on Discover Available Services.
  • Double click on Dial-up networking.
  • Type ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM in the User name field.
  • Type CINGULAR1 in the Password field.
  • In the "Dial" field, type *99***1#
  • Click on Dial.
You will now be connected to the Cingular GPRS service.
If unable to connect or experiencing issues with specific service or applications contact Cingular Customer Care for further troubleshooting.
