I don't think so. It may work for 16-bit PCMICA cards but not for 32-bit (CardBus) cards. I once read a paper that compared 16-bit PCMICA to ISA slots found on older computers. 32-bit were compared to PCI slots. USB isn't fast enough to emulate a full PCI slot that's why the U132 was developed for that specific, relatively low bandwidth propose.

Any wireless Internet PCMICA cards you buy anymore are all CardBus (32-bit). That's for good reason, better power management, less heat, etc. then 16-bit cards, but it creates a challenge when trying to connect to the USB port. That's why the U132 was developed.

I'm going to guess by the above comment that you're using EVDO instead of EDGE.

However, for the sake of anyone else reading this thread and looking for a Cingular/T-Mobile solution, there's the SAMBA 75. Instead of a PCMCIA to USB adapter, it's a USB GSM/GPRS/EDGE modem that you simply pop your SIM card into.

There was some talk last year of Falcom making a product just like the SAMBA 75 for EVDO, but I don't believe that it ever saw the light of day. You might ask them and see if they still plan on releasing an EVDO version.

Not too much more...

I wonder how strong the signal would be for cars around me?

Say we're on a road trip, headed to a show and we're caravaning. Think it would be strong enough for someone in a car behind us a bit to pick up on the signal with their laptop?

anyone know what voltage the wall wart converts to?

most wifi without repeaters are capped at 100m (328 feet) in a perfect environment with no interference. so yes you would be able to share with a few cars around you.

also. you dont need that router. although it is kinda cool.

look at network connections. you should see a wireless connection. change it to connect to ad-hoc. and then name the connection to redgti. or whatever. then need to alow connection sharing. and then the last thing you need to do is when you install your 3G card it made a modem in the connections. share that out with your lan port. then bridge the lan and the wireless connection and everyone thats around you within that space limit should be able to see you and connect to you. theyll might have to set there connections to allow them to connect to ad-hoc networks(peer-2-peer) but it should be all good.

I do it at work with my verizon card. they make me pay for unlimited so i share it. I connect to the service and it broadcasts the signal out over my built in wireless card. lol. anyone within a few hundred feet can whore my connection for all its worth. ill get my moneys worth for that unlimited thats for sure.

see, even then I'd still have to spend the 190 on the USB dongle.

So why not just go ahead and do this option for a more integrated feature?
