Track my vehicle REAL TIME GPS

i wanted to know because i was trying to understand (im technical, but when i read forums the topic jumps all over and i lose in the complexity)

and i am new to this forum so please guide me if this topic was covered already.

this is my goal. i said lojack, teletrac, onstar, is available in USA.
these products are normally installed by dealers and cost a bunch of good hard earned money., instantly doubling or tripling when deciding to go fleet or a few cars. they often help a person recover a vehicle in the case of carjacking, or theft. i always say insurance can pay for some theft, but in certain customized cars, heart and soul are lost if you are one of those guys who mods his ride for shows or just likes to go steps further., when recovered in this case, it is a better feeling than if a "normal daily driver" vehicle is recovered.

here is a p/m i gave to a member here., his thread was found by keywords i used on google tonight.

i am thinking if i get a nextel phone and just use it as a tracking device, i could at minimum save the cost of what a person would normally pay for a gps tracking device and installation into their vehicle.
but if boost or another common low cost thing is out there for me, im in!

......
how ya doing PURDooM? My name is Ron and I googled "nextel as mobile tracker" and the thread you started came up. it sounds like you have some good knowledge here, so ill ask away if you dont mind.

first my aim is imintouch and i get online all the time so if you wanna chat about this - would be great.

i want to install a gps tracking device on my vehicle, but the vehicle i need it installed to is mostly garaged and theres usually another vehicle in the drive blocking it, so for purposes of stolen recovery is the idea. (when im out)
i know most newer cars have chips in their keys and i know i can also buy a paging alarm for a simple way to deter theft...

i looked into a device called trimtrack. its costs about 600. and i pay some fee like 60 monthly to get a tracking over internet website every 5 minutes.
if i track in longer intervals i can pay less, but in reality if the car is stolen i was it tracked as close as real time i can to alert authorities of the whereabouts.

i say to myself WAIT, i have this customer that uses nextel phones and in speaking with the companys dispatcher of their fleet of dump trucks for gravel, he showed me one day this online app, and viola here are his drivers on a map, real time, instantly.

here is your thread i was interested in
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/wireless-communications/75451-boost-mobile.html

it appears to be a super long topic and it hits back and forth about using the boost phone for gps, internet etc etc, but on the other hand, or you stating i can buy a boost with has no commitment and use it as a tracking device??
was it like a after the fact time tracker and logger u are talking about with this software you mentioned? or is this software for tracking the phone real time?

what i know thus far, ad i am hoping to learn of even a lesser costly alternative for what i want to do (simply track a gps phone realtime as a car tracker)
the nextel stores and private stores tell me i need to buy a $50 handset, 2 yrs commitment, and get a $50 rebate, and buy a minimum plan of $29.95 and add mobile tracking for $15 monthly. then i assume i can just decide to throw, hide, or place the phone in a car for hours or rig one with a cig adapter source to be hidden that keeps a charge onto the battery (maybe a trickle one instead of a regular charge).

if the vehicle gets stolen, i can track it., when my son becomes 16 in a few months, i can discreetly place my nextel phone into his car perhaps under his seat and track where he goes.

let me know if what you are talking about is something that could save me money. if im gonna pay about 50 bucks monthly to get unlimited gps tracking ($29.95 calling plan i wont use minutes on, and the mobile tracking option of $15) , i said to myself why pay $600+ for a set like trimtrak when nextel gives the phone for free?

again i wont need to use the phone whatsoever for voice, simply and solely for a gps tracker device that i can jump online and locate the whereabouts of the phone.

thanks,

This would work if you have cell access.

GPS tracking

maybe somebody could mod one of these units... or build a similar unit as shown in the stompbox tutorial http://www.stompboxnetworks.com/buildit.html .. just a thought http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/security/8212/ cost is a little much on the gps log device.

The device on thinkgeek is just a glorified gps. All it does is log where it's been. Just like every other gps you can pick up at the local sports store. It just doesn't have a display so it will run longer.

I bought a i450 from walmart (a 415 would be cheaper) and pay about $9 a month for the internet package. Using Mologogo, my phone uploads my coordinates to my website.

that's it, about $9 a month for tracking.

See my posts in the Boost thread on page 15, there are screen shots from my website.

I know this is an old thread and all...but wouldn't it make sense to just put a wireless card into your pc, and get an app that will constantly try to upload the GPS coordinates to your ftp server. for that matter you could hide a camera in the car and have pictures of the jackass who took your ride. You could use a something like wifiradar to get you connected while the punk drives. he won't even realize it. Best would be when he gets to his destination and its got a hotspot lol try explaining that away in court.

i'd say any tracking system is worth it if you love your ride. my last truck got stolen and it took 3 weeks to recover, by the time i got it back the motor was blown and of course anything on the inside was gone. the police never really did anything.....i had people i knew chasing them around before any cops would.
