DLink EV-DO Router DIR-450

Surprised I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but then I think the thing was only released recently.

Due to my Comcast connection crapping out earlier today, and my unwillingness to sit around while I wait for them to figure out what's going on (I work from home), I started looking around for a router that would work with my VZW Novatel V620 card.

Lo and behold, a search for EVDO on BestBuy.com yielded this.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1158104010642

Look! An EVDO Router that works with a bunch of cards, from both sprint and Verizon! How curious! Even better that it is NOT on D-Link's site.

The price online is not the price in store, btw. It's a full 199 if you go to pick it up, but still a good deal!

I've been toying with it a little bit. First of all, it's on the first revision of firmware (1.00, hardware A1), which was released Sept 6, 2006. Fairly scary, but it seems pretty solid. It's supposed to guide you through a 'setup wizard' when you connect and browse to the interface, but that part is a little weak. Just hit the 'manual configuration'. Unfortunately it refers you to the 'ISP' for your card for the connection settings, but the manual VZW settings worked fine for me (number@vzw3g.com, etc..)

It'll tell you your external IP, has WiFi-G built in, four ethernet ports on the back, and a USB port I haven't figured out yet. For a router that you just want to get online with, and is fairly portable, this is a pretty good deal. The box is probably a little bigger than the Linksys.

Let me know if you've got any questions, and i'll dig into it a little!

Supported Cards

Sprint

* Kyocera KPC 650
* Novatel V620
* Sprint PCS Connection Card PC-5740
* Sierra AC 580
* Sierra AC 5220

Verizon

* Novatel V620
* Verizon PCS Connection Card PC-5740
* Kyocera KPC650
* Sierra AC 580

Far as I can tell, this is cheaper?

I don't have a KR1 to test it against..as said, let me know if there are any specs you want me to try to find out and we can do a compare.

As far as I can tell, the dial number is the same as verizon, #777. As for the user and password, I can't seem to find any info. You may want to try asking the people at EVDOForums. http://www.evdoforums.com/index.php

I have this router and I posted pics in another thread here.. I have seen threads about this router as well so it's not exactly unnoticed..

As for password and dial #.. it's been over a month but once i got the card activated on my laptop, i don't recall putting anything in for password dial number or anything like that on the router.. all i remember doing was selecting the card type.. I think it was plug and play.. if that's not the case I'll login to my router and look but i'm too lazy and it's too cold out right now..

I've had a KR1 in the past, and this router supports VPN pass-through for Nortel Contivity and Cisco, as the KR1 did not. For the money, this is a great router.

This adapter from RadioShack works perfect for using this router in your car: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search
