Kamikaze's '99 Sunfire rebuild ;)

Well, since i didn't make one of these for the first one, I'm gunna start one now for the upcoming rebuild. My previous CarPC project was stolen from my car, in my driveway, while I slept. They got away with the computer, my 2 Alpine MRV-T320's, a cap, a Tsunami fuse block, my XMD-1000, and my sub box, not to mention hours of dev and build time, and a ton of sentimental value. Then to add insult to injury, my insurance company is giving me the run-around as well. I'm supposed to hear back from them on Monday, and if all goes well I'll start placing orders for the new system.

The planned specs are as follows:

Jetway 2ghz C7 mobo with the PCMCIA daughterboard / VIA MII12000 (haven't decided which board i'm gunna get)
512MB Ram (DDR2 if i go with the Jetway board)
80GB HDD (SATA if i go with the Jetway board)
M2-ATX 160w power supply
Panasonic Slim Slotload dvd-rw
Buffalo PCMCIA WiFi card with external magnetic eBay antenna
Morex 3688 mini-itx case
On Board sound and video (I might get a USB DAC instead of the onboard audio)

And as far as new stereo equipment goes, I'm really hoping to get the following:

Alpine PDX 4.100 4x100w
Alpine PDX 1.600 1x600w
2 Set's of Alpine Type R Components
10" Alpine Type R Sub and box

Since insurance isn't going to cover alot for the stereo since i got alot of it used the stereo that i've got picked out is dependant on wether or not i can get financing. I"ve decided that if i'm going to rebuild the stereo system, i'm not going to screw around and piece it together one bit at a time. It's all or nothing. I know of a local shop that does financing and a friend of mine got a bunch of stuff there.

I'd also really like to get some sort of 1/2 DIN EQ that I can mount upfront and another XMD unit as well..

Anyway, that's all I have for now. I'll be updating this thread with my progress, and pics, and any other info that pertains to the new install. Feel free to comment on/critique my planned setup. I'm very open to suggestion.

good deal, at least your insurance is covering the stolen goods... was it through homeowners insurance or your car insurance that covered it? Since it was parked overnight, i would think the homeowners?

Auto, actually...i've learned my lesson tho...the new system will have it's own seperate policy covering replacement value, and every last nut and bolt will be photgraphed and documented with the insurance company...i've spent the last 2, almost 3 weeks trying to get this sorted out, and it'll likely be another week before i see a check.

ugh, they always try taking as much money from you as possible and giving as little back in return... it's a money business, that's what they have to do. At least they're giving you some back. I heard a story on my other forum of a person who lost a hell of alot of his equip, ended up getting only $271 back, and had to pay the deductible of $250, they sent him a check for $21 and raised his insurance price.

Well, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm going with now. Specs will be as follows:

Jetway 2ghz C7 mobo with the PCMCIA daughterboard
512MB DDR2 400
80GB HDD SATA
Buffalo Wifi card and ebay antenna
Morex case (either the 2688 or the 2799)

A friend of mine is convinced that he can mod the 60w power supply that came with my old mini-itx case to run directly off the battery, and not only that but also help me build a basic I/O controller using the parallel port. He says that we can use the computer with the parallel I/O as a shutdown controller, all we'd need to do is write some basic code in vb. Not only will i have a software driven shutdown controller, but i'll also have a few extra ins/outs to play with as well. so instead of getting the M2-ATX i'll be trying this first in an attempt to save some cash. I figure if it doesn't work out, i'll just get an M2 anyway, and the mods to the 60w supply aren't expensive so i'll try it first. I'm also skipping the dvd-rw for now as the old machine had one and I hardly used it.

I've also modified the stereo plans quite significantly. After talking to Concepts on Wheels in Markham, they're convinced that they can put together a better sounding system than what I outlined above for alot less money. They are suggesting Morel dotech ovation components for the front stage, no rears (i'll just use my existing 6x9's until i can afford another set of the Morel's) a DLS Classic series 5ch amp, and an Image Dynamics IDQ 10" sub. i'm going tuesday afternoon to talk to the guy and have a listen to these components and check out the other stuff as well.

Well, got my check from the insurance company today, so I ordered some parts.

i should be recieving tomorrow a Jetway mobo with the pcmcia/cf reader, and a buffalo wifi card. The ram and hdd we had in stock, and a friend of mine who's carpc blew up on him a couple of days ago donated his old morex case. He went with one of the pre-built mini Acer systems that we have for sale, and he absolutely loves it ( linky for anyone interested ) so he didn't need his case anymore. I'm gunny try the 60w power supply that i'd replaced from my last morex case and won't be buying another M2 unless i really need to. The same friend is building me a basic parallel port i/o controller and is going to show me how to code vb for it so i'll be able to integrate that into my frontend as well.

Well, been a while since I've updated this. Since the last post, I've bought a house and because of that CarPC was shelved inefinately. I got it all back up and running a couple months ago and got bitten by the software bug, so i started writing yet another version of my CarPC frontend in VB 6. The new frontend is coming along quite nicely, altho I've been too busy the last couple of weeks to work on it.

Computer specs are still as follows:

Jetway 2ghz C7 mobo with the PCMCIA daughterboard
512MB DDR2 400
80GB HDD SATA
Buffalo Wifi card and ebay antenna

I'm hoping that I can come up with a creative way to fit a DSATX power supply in a Voom 2 or Morex 5677 case, but I'm not sure if it'll fit.
