I've been looking on the Matrix Orbital site for a nice little VFD to put in my rear view mirror, but i really don't have a clue what i'm looking for or what controller i'd need. i want a little 4 line display or two 2 lines side by side. Any ideas?

for in your rear view mirror? Thats crazy, but yeah I'm not sure how big your rear view is but if its the size of the ones I'm used to, such as my '95 monte carlo (which shouldn't be too far off of your's then I wouldn't go any more then a 2 line. Something like this http://www.matrixorbital.com/product...character-vfds should do it, but check the thickness to see if its okay.
If you want to/have to go with usb then I'd go with this one http://www.matrixorbital.com/product...character-vfds its just a little bit bigger. What are you going to be displaying in it? And are you sure that you are comfortable with the software available for it, different screens use different software it seems. I'm really not sure how good the other screens or software is becasue I've always been ultra happy with my matrix orbital and lcdc solution
[/OT]
I was just thinking, and I could even put this screen as a flip up screen on the dashboard and use it for gps only... my god talking about my vfd I could even prob. make something up so that it would flip up only when I had my gps software running or at the very least have it go up via the computer.

It's not crazy just factory
actually it's the exact same mirror as the monte's i'm using the one out of my 97 monte (RIP)
Does this one come with the cable to hook it up?
I'm also looking at this one since it seems to be less but have everything, right?
I've been messing with the software that you're using and i really like it.
I thought about the flip up idea for GPS but it would need a hood otherwise you will get a really bad glare, right?

hmmmm, thats true, we'll see....
And that second screen would be too big and too much for a rear view mirror in my opinion. Not to mention that they are new so I'm not sure how much software support there is yet... Honestly I have no experience with those at all.
And the first one I'm not 100% about the cable but i'd say so, if not they're cheap, just a usb connection

DUDE! That was my idea about a year ago! :-) i think there is a thread discussing it.
i have a vfd (1x20) that I could sell you cheaply if you want to mess around with it. i could even make a deal with you if you were willing to make me a cable as well (i have two vfd's hanging around). though, if i were you, i'd check into the new line of gx character lcd screens along with lcdstudio. edit... on second thought i remember seeing the guts of that unit and it's still too large for the rearview mirror
.

Dennis... I totally overlooked this thread until just now. it's coming out great and i love the oem goal that you have. looking forward to your final install

Thats sounds like a plan, pm me with what the backs look like for connection wise. I saw the guts awhile back for the new gx screens and they'll fix. (I talked about it and photoshopped it in my worklog) Sorry Dennis , anymore progress?

Lookin good dennis! I like your clean wiring from the begining. That takes patience. Where are you going to fit your behringer DSP at?

wow, thanks for the kind words guys, you have no idea how much I needed this...
With my amp not working and school getting hard I've been kinda bumed out latley with my install... getting to the point that I was starting to think I'd never finnish.
However, with some interest in it, and a little pick me up from my dad I think I'm back on the horse... My dad saw I was slowing down, so he took the liberty to "steal" my lcd bezel and bring it to his brothers shop, he then called mazda, got the color he needed, and painted it.. I must say, I'm EXTREMLY impressed.
The bondoing part wasn't perfect, but hey, it was a learning experience, but the paint makes it look like a million dollars. I'll put some pics up later on...
durwood: Thats a problem I've been trying to figure out... I'm thinking about building a shelf under my 300/4 (the amp on the left) and have the carputer on the right of that... however I can't fit both the computer I have now, and the DSP. On the upside it is complete overkill to have an intel core2duo in the car now that I have a sound processor... So I will probably end up taking that computer as a desktop and getting a mini-itx board.
So... the new plan for the amp rack is pretty much...
300/4 500/1
-----------------
DSP Comp
If anyone has any other suggestions... I'd be glad to hear them, just make sure you don't forget that this car has to be able to fit snowboard in it.... lol

Hmmm...maybe go with that new 1.5 celeron based ITX for $70 and fit it in your glove box and put the processor in the trunk just below the amps? I know those mazda 3s have huge glove boxes.

hehe, that they do...
but how do you think it wil handle with heat and noise of fans?
At least if it was in the trunk I wouldn't hear the fans...
edit: Also durwood, I'm still not 100% on what speakers to get... I'm running active so I can pretty much get w/e... Knowing that I want to keep the stock speaker locations for security reasons... any suggestions for what speakers I should get? I'm aiming for a $400 max for 2 tweets and 2 woofers ...help...

So, what does everyone think of these speakers... I know they're technically home speakers and 8 ohm... but I'm fine not having an increadibly loud system, 40 watts to the woofers and 10-15 to the tweets would be fine with me...

Hey Dennis Looks good, I agree with durwood about the wireing looks good from the pics. As far as the pc in the glove box with fans. Heat isnt an issue for me as I ran it in the hottest part of the summer with th ewindows down for 4hr and temp only got to 86f according to asus probe. I also have 3 fans one pulling air into the glovebox and one pushing air out of the glovebox as well as one on top of the processor. With no music on I can hear the 2 fans that push and pull air.

hey dennis, really looking great so far, like durwood said, nice attention to detail, most guys would want to throw everything in & get it working right away, almost like there testing the waters to see how it works out, then if it works out ok they'll want to go back & redo everything, but to install everything right from the get, knowing it's just going to work out is the right way to do it, keep up the good work, & patience dude;D
