2001 Nissan Xterra

Hi everyone,
After reading the forums for a couple of months I've decided to attempt my own carputer. From the title of this thread you can tell that the car i'm working on is a 2001 Nissan Xterra. Everything on this car is pretty much stock. Thankfully, I'm not the first one to try this installation on this model vehicle. I've been following examples given by:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/work...an-xterra.html
http://www.k06.net/Xterra/
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/fabr...-carputer.html

Okay time for the components:

VIA EPIA-MII12000G Mini-ITX Motherboard
- $176.95 | http://www.mini-box.com/VIA-EPIA-MII...=8&category=99
- I got this board because i heard good things about it and it was a reasonable price. Plus I can add a PCMCIA wireless card in the future.
-I'm not sure if i should get 512mb or just get 1gb for memory.

Panasonic Slot Load DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo Drive
- $69.99 | http://store.mp3car.com/ProductDetai...Code=OPT%2D002
- I gotta have a slot load drive

USB-PCB-E1
- $9.00 | http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=3022
- Since my computer will be at the back of the vehicle I need to extend the cable from the DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo Drive to the computer and I'm not sure how far IDE cables can go. So the next best thing is to use USB.
- I'm not sure if I will need external power to run the drive or hope the USB can power it.

Lilliput 7" VGA Touchscreen 619GL-70NP
- $251.00 | http://store.mp3car.com/Lilliput_7_V..._p/mon-001.htm
- everyone else is using this, I might as well

M2-ATX 160W DC-DC Power Supply
- $89.00 | http://www.logicsupply.com/product_i...roducts_id/504
- Awesome power supply and can proved enough power for what i need.

Wester Digital 120G IDE hard drive
- Old hard drive i had laying around.

I'll post more later

Well, sorry for the lack of update however i have started receiving my items and I have started connecting them.

First up the liliput screen:

Nice screen works very well, I'm trying to figure out the best way to Extend the breakout cable. I remember reading a post stating that a good cable to use is a 9-pin mini din. After buying a couple of these cables i noticed that the way the male and female interfaces on the breakout cable were not aligned the same as with the cables I bought. Also the break out cable interface seemed like it was 10 pin instead of 9. So I though of taking the other route and buy separate vga cables and usb cables. I opted for the generic/cheap brand of vga cable and got what i paid for. After connecting the extension VGA cable between the motherboard and the lcd touchscreen the picture quality was missing some red color. So this time I plan to get a better type cable.
Next item i got ws the M2-ATX 160W DC-DC Power Supply:

Very nice device, I have it powering everything except my touchscreen

One thing I wanted was a slot loading cd/dvd slim cdrom:

However the problem was since I was going to have the mother board at the back of the vehicle and the drive at the front console i would need to extend the cable. I'm not sure how far i can extend IDE cables but I have a feeling they won't work well going past 6 feet. So I found an Alternative.
USB-PCB-E1:

This is a very nice module that converts the ATA interface of the drive to USB. I connected this module to the drive and tried it out. I had problems at first because after inserting a cd/dvd into the drive it would just spin and fail. Until someone mention that it probably needed more power. So I got a barrel plug and connected the it to the module and applied power to the plug (btw the outer portion of the plug is negative and the inner is positive).

That's all i have for now, I'll take more pictures of the system later on.

thread moved to the work logs forum.

I also added some lines between your pictures to keep the format of the page in tact.
