2001 GTI Worklog.. and it begins

Well i have been studying & researching this site for a little under 2 years and decided the time has come for me to get started. That & my cd player went out in my car so i figured I might as well start the carputer process.

I already had an aftermarket head unit, amp, & subwoofer installed so that will ultimately make things easier. Here is a list of what I've bought so far..

Lilliput HR-702 - $150 from ebay was supposed to be a 619 but the seller tagged it wrong. Trying to sell right now

Epia Samuel 2- 800 mhz processor
Lilliput 629- $150 ebay
MK4 bezel- $119 mp3car store
m2-atx- $89 mp3car store
Pharos 500- $20 craigslist
1gb pc133 memory- $40 craigslist my mobo will only had 1 512 stick
XP pro, Roadrunner, & digital fx 2.0
Alpine cda-9851

I've already gone through a few plans so far... but my first plan was to make the monsoon converter box. I've sinced crap that plan and will relocate a head unit in my glove box. I'm planning on removing my amp & subwoofer as for now until i can get my mobo in that monsoon amp space.

I'm going to use the power, ground, & remote wires that were plugged into the amp & just use those for m2-atx. I'm planning on starting my wiring this weekend so we'll see how things go. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Im not familiar with your motherboard, but double check its specs and see if it can handle 1 gig of memory. My intel board cant. Its not that old, but 512 is its limit. I was quite dissapointed.

Yeah Epia is the name of the setup but the board is a Via 800 or something close, I'll have to check the bios when i get a chance. When I install 1gig I get no video, 784mb I get red lines then the BSOD, 640 seems to be running fine as of now.

Well my 629 arrived today from ebay but it didn't come with the usb/vga cable which sucks meaning I'm going to have to wait longer to get everything setup. It looks like the mp3car store may have some extras if the seller doesn't find it.

Wow well I hadn't updated this thing in ages.. I will try to post pictures soon enough as I am pretty much finished with the install.

I actually have changed a lot of things from my original post so here goes.. OH yeah and thanks to Proph for all the help with everything.

I have my motherboard/processor/hard drive in the place where your cd changer would normally go on a non conductive tray that pretty much just slides out. He's one of the baddest mother****** on the planet! I have since removed my stock monsoon amp and I'm running a 5 channel amp to a crossover to my DAC (digital to analog converter)

I picked up the Visteon HD Radio and have it setup behind my screen in the front. It's not as great as I thought it would be but still better than nothing with no head unit. Also have usb cables running to the front so I can plug my phone in for internet or my ipod in for transferring files.

I have also made some hardware changes.. I picked up a BU-353 instead of the Pharos gps unit. I had the intel d201gly but had all kinds of hibernation/startup issues. I now have a jetway board and it is very nice.. resumes from hibernation in less than about 10 seconds.

Besides that I will post pictures of everything here in the next few days..

I

Pictures finally!!!

So I finally got around to putting some pictures up of my install. I had my pc pulled out to get a new hard drive so I figured what better time that now. The picture quality isn't great.. I took these with my phone.

Before shot of my dash..

And after shot..

Here's my motherboard tray made with non conductive metal that holds my mobo and power supply (m2-atx)

This is the stock cd changer tray with my 2.5 hard drive attached

Here's is the mobo tray fit into the cd changer

Another angle..

And the last angle..

The only fan I have is my cpu fan and I've had 0 issues with heating even with everything in the compartment in the hatch. I think the highest I've seen my cpu temp get up to is 43C, but it usually is at about 40c during the day.
