Interesting - it didn't work the same for me. It rotated the screen to landscape mode on the iPhone and the external video when I used it.

I've noticed that there are a lot of haters on this project. I wonder if Ill see them pulled over near starbucks or someother free wifi spot waitin on the next post while were seemlessly connected from house to car to school to work over on our extremely slow processor

Bugbyte I think there is a component cable offered for the iPhone as well. Can't one go from component to VGA with a simple cable? I'm pretty sure u can u just can't go from VGA to component. That would give us better resolution.

The cable he has is the only one available unless you go to the 5 wire component. A VGA cable would be pretty nice though.
It'd be nice to have a landscape e-mail or really even everything turn to landscape haha.
After using winter board to make the dock transperant and the titles of the apps dissapear it looks cleaner but if the icons could turn it's be perfect.

There are no haters, just dont feel it is a replacement or death of the Car PC. My CarPC comes with a express card Sprint Air Card which is much faster then AT&T and seemlessly is connected. Infact I do recall at the Florida meet, my Sprint card was always able to connect while AT&T had issues at some points. So that still doesnt justify replacing a CarPC. Also when the IpHone becomes outdated with 4G coming out, you have to replace your phone, I simply replace my expresscard.

All opinions are welcome, as long we don't degenerate into name calling.

I know this prototype won't replace the car PC and that it will have more limited functionality than a full blown car PC. But I am convince that one day in the not so distant future that won't be true. I want to work towards understanding and finding solutions to the problems of current 'smart' devices before that time comes.

The amount of innovation on this forum is astonishing. If I can inspire others to work on some of these problems and share a vision of moving from a focus on the car PC as a device and towards the mobile computing experience, we'll be ahead of that wave when it comes. I can't think of a better place to do it than here and I'm doing it publicly so others can learn and share from my work.

I'm not worried about my 3G iPhone. With over 6.9 million (yes, million) iPhone 3G's sold in the last quarter of 2008 alone, I don't think the 3G will become "outdated" anytime soon.

The iPhone 3G is the #1 selling smartphone. With a user base that large the developer community (myself included) are paying attention and building tons of apps daily and will continue to do so for a long long time.

Your work on the iBug was one of the projects that got me started. There's an amazing wealth of information available here; the greatest challenge is to sift through it and not miss much.

I agree that the current phones aren't ready to completely replace the carPC, but they're very close. Phones, UMPCs and netbooks/minitablets are just about at a common point in capabilities, and I expect to see phones with external video soon. Bluetooth printing is already possible, so there's not a whole lot separating the categories any more.

With phone manufacturers (except Apple) going to a universal charging port, perhaps they'll use it to bring some innovative docking solutions, external video, plug-and-play printing, external keyboards, and so on.

The phone is becoming our personal communicator that links to our other systems and carries our information. I suppose that, eventually, all that stuff will be on a chip implanted on us somewhere. In the meantime, I just want to plug in my phone and have it work magic.

Bugbyte, thanks for help lead the charge.

Just a note to anyone going down this path: The eBay iPhone composite video cables that claim 100% compatibility with iPhone 3G V2.2 do NOT work. I bought 2 and neither would work more than 15 seconds. I bought the real thing and it works every time. So spend the extra dough in the beginning to avoid paying for trash cables.

Good point. The ONLY 100% compatible iPhone 3G composite cable available (right now) is the one made by Apple.

WOW!

TV comes to the iPhone! Just another example of how the iPhone is slowly turning into a nice replacement for the CarPC.

Video options for the iPod/iPhone reviewed

I've put some of my thoughts about two products for video output into the following video.

iPodVideo2
You need to upgrade your Flash Player

Rough steps are:

1. Jailbreak your iPod/iPhone using QuickPwn
2. Use Cydia to load Screensplitr, or TVOut. If you want to control the iPod from a browser wirelessly, load Veency and follow instructions in the video.

Props to Plutinosoft's Sylvain for writing this app. Can you figure out how to hook up a touchscreen via bluetooth or something?

I'm also going to post this step as a separate thread in the mobile mesh forum.
