Unfortunately it doesn't do turn by turn voice like the jailbreak xGPS does. I have both but at the time my side of the country wasn't released yet so I didn't try it on the road.
Superfly - does Appflow work for you? Mine doesn't work since IDK what iPhone firmware version came out. Erica needs to update this and add toggles to turn off unneeded apps.
So guys.... I've been waiting for Apple's 'tablet' forever and again the rumors are coming on strong again that we'll see this pretty soon. I suspect it'll be like a giant iPhone. The current rumor for size is 10" which IMO is too big for the car but I'm sure it'll have a nice petite bezel.
Would a multi-touch tablet (giant iPhone/iPod Touch) be able to be used in the car? I have a fantasy of just popping it in some type of stand/dock and grabbing it at will to bring in the house, etc. Would such a device be able to power a car's full stereo system properly? IDK how that would work.

Somehow I don't foresee it being a problem.

Just tried appflow but it crashes on my iPhone. It looks pretty cool, though. Hopefully it will get better.
I'm so wired about this convergence of the smart device with the car/mobile. It's happening very, very quickly.
Consider:
1. GPS - already solutions for jailbroken phones and Apple is sure to release something 'real soon' that should be acceptable.
2. Using Dot.Tunes I can access all of my music without regard to the size of the memory in the iPod. As long as I have a net connection I can access and play video anywhere on the planet. I just point my iPod to an I.P. address and bam! Up come my artist, album, genre, playlists and everything.
3. External video capability. Not perfect, but not bad either. More videos of what it looks like in the near future.
4. Apps, apps, and more apps. Everyone is developing everything for the iPod/iPhone and you basically don't lack for apps.
What we need:
1. Some way to control the iPod while driving. Some way to auto flip the screen without having to shift the iPod's position. A double tap on the screen that flips it or a double swipe or something like that.
2. Some kind of front end software to manage it. An app of some kind. At least at first.
3. Some way to connect the iPod by WiFi to control stuff in the car.
That will do for now.

I just ran into Innovate Motorsports’ OT-2 "OpenTune" interface for the iPod to read OBD codes and provide vehicle data. It runs with LogWorks Mobile software, available at the Apple Store.
It's odd how fast things have changed. For many years, the vast majority of development was for Windows; in a surprisingly short time, a huge number of innovators seem to have moved to the burgeoning iPhone market.
There's an iPhone upgrade rumored for June. If that's not just wishful thinking, I may be forced to buy one, just so I can dance along the leading -- often bleeding -- edge.

I know you have an ipod bug but not sure which version. A non tethered jailbreak has been released by someone other than the Dev Team. They are charging for it, but if you are in need of it.

That OBD reader is awsome.

I'm going to email Erica and ask what the status is on updating Appflow to work with current iPhone versions. Maybe if others do as well, we can afford an outcome.
Re this ODB business. Would Dynolicious be enough? http://www.dynolicious.com/gallery.php $12-ish bucks in the App store.
Has anyone seen this not-yet-released thing from iSimple? The OmniWire
http://isimplesolutions.com/CES/OmniWire.asp I'm not sure it would bring anything to the table though but I keep reading it over & over. Newbie me.
Bug - Are you not able to get an iPhone at this time? I find the 3g works great and often get no palpable difference between it and Wifi.

It looks to me like the OmniWire solution is the same as the Apple cable, although without the cigarette lighter plug.

Oh no, I'm able to get one! I'm just too cheap to buy it at the moment. My current phone is the Boost Mobile drug dealer special and it runs me right around $10 a month, including the position reporting Mologogo tracking feature (see the link in my signature).
Upgrading to the iPhone will cost me whatever the iPhone costs plus $60 a month. I'm increasing my phone and data costs by $600 a year. I don't use my phone very often, I'm too old to have friends who text each other, and the only reason for having it is to replace my car PC with it.
Until I've got a lot of the particulars down, like how to use it, ways to control it and so forth, my iPod touch is free. If I spring for the GPS ($90), and can hold off buying the iPhone for another 2 months or so, the data plan charges alone would pay for it.
What I need is a really good work reason to get one of these phones. Probably not going to happen, though.

Bug - I understand. I don't work and have my husband and one other friend I text with, etc. I lived with the 1st gen phone as only an expensive iPod Touch for almost a year before adding the phone and data plan. I lived like that quite well though what a treat when I finally did bite the bullet. I ditched our land line which was $35 a month even if I didn't make a single call so it was much easier to justify. I do regret not doing it sooner though.
I hope you all nail this down pristinely soon. I hope to buy a new car and am holding off pending sorting out what I can do with what car on my list. Currently, I planned to buy a top of the line Hyundai Santa Fe which has a great iPod integration for 2009 BUT they say no iPod if you buy the Nav! iSimple even claims their device won't work with that LG Nav due to the way it stores XM or something. PAC, etc. like in the video don't seem to make one for this car. I'm really ****ed. I only know that I can play/watch DVDs on it unlike my hubbies Acura TL yet perhaps it's crippled in other ways.
I think I need to head over to the newbie forum for help cuz I simply don't accept anyone telling me I can't do something.
Bug - Did you see this story today from Gizmodo re the iPod Touch jailbreak? Not sure if this pertains to you. http://i.gizmodo.com/5167923/ipod-to...cks-the-tether

I'm jailbroken but my son's version 2.0 isn't and as soon as he saw what I could do with it, he wanted his jailbroken. Thanks for the link.
As for the car - tell them to deliver it with no nav, buy a screen, install it and plug your iPhone in.

Yea but the car has an Infinity 10-speaker Logic7 surround which sounds really good. I'm worried that anything I do, like an aftermarket chinese nav, or screen, etc. won't be able to run the stereo to its full goodness. That's my main brain-block. While it would be cool to run my iPhone to the Mimo for example or a Liliput, etc.... if I can't get true sound out of my stereo - then I'm screwed.

i just reactivated my boost mobile phone for modem duties and so my clients could reach me via a local number (my primary cell phone has an out of state number). based on our conversation, i think the young lady who took my call may have initially suspected that i was planning on using the phone for some shady business.

hey bugbyte, pretty ambitious project you got going... I think what your trying to do is a great idea & will eventually be similar to what the future holds, a module (iphone) that contains all of the logic & functionality that docks to the car. when in the car it is your multimedia & intelligence center. when you leave the car, the whole thing undocks & comes with you & of course has it's own touchscreen to be fully usable outside of the vehicle.
I have no doubt this is what the future holds, weather it's actually the iphone itself or some other piece of equipment that is the "module" at that point is harder to speculate, but I think your on a great path with this either way.
I bought an ipod touch to add to my car, was mainly looking to do data acquisition with the various dyno software available, figured the touch was not much more $$ than a dedicated performance meter like a g-tech or something. If I would be happy with the interface & usage I would consider building it into my car in a permanent way, my biggest disappointment with the ipod in the car was the having to switch back & forth to landscape, I also was extremely annoyied that I could not get it to stay illuminated permanently. I'll admit that for my little playing that I did I did not do anywhere near the research or spend the time that you have in this ipod though, so maybe there is a solution to keeping it illuminated all the time? overall I was disapointed & winded up buying a g-tech pro to build into the car anyway, but I may play some more with the ipod down the road to see if I can integrate it in a way that I am satisfied with.
if you ever get to the point of having this integrated to your liking & need a hand with building a really nice funky dock lmk, good luck with it
