Dell Mini9 / iPhone combo in a Scion xB

Items:

Dell Mini9
iPhone 3G

2/19/2008
Currently designing a custom laptop stand over the manual shifter and in front of the HVAC controls for the laptop. I will also be building in a custom iPhone holder into the stand so I can tether the iPhone 3G to the laptop for a full time internet connection. I should have pictures of the finished stand this weekend.

Future:
1. Figure out how to get video from my iPhone to display on the Dell Mini9. (The mini9 does not have a video input). I could do it with a component to usb converter, but I'm not sure if the onboard video in the Mini9 is up to the task.

2. Build a custom enclosure so I can have the dell mini9 inside of the dash itself and not on a laptop stand. I've seen RDHoltz great setup here, but I don't care for the look of the laptop sticking out of the dash.

After having it that way for a while, I don't care for the laptop sticking out of the dash, either. All the work being done with the iPhone and other phone-based systems in this MP3Car forum has me pondering yet another shift in direction, probably away from the netbooks to a phone-powered screen. It looks like the bleeding edge of carPCs has taken another leap, and -- with the iPhone in your car -- you're already well down that path.

I already have a MiMo UM-740 on the way as well for an additional screen. Just trying to figure out how to tie this all together. I'd love to have one screen for music/video, one for Nav and one for a ODBC/Backup camera.

My mind is cranking.

Try Veency to get your iPhone onto your netbook. You probably can't do video, but your netbook does video better anyway. Veency should be fine for xGPS or Pandora though. Use PDAnet to get internet into the netbook and you'll be golden.
