Next Part of the Plan

The next phase of my project will be mounting the DVD drive. I am thinking of mounting it in the front storage bin (see pic below). Next week I will look into purchasing the M4-ATX enclosure which will help mount it against the other wall across from the PC.

This is the pic of where I'm thinking of mounting the DVD drive. I am hoping to be able to still close the door and only open it when I need to use the drive. Obviously my project was modified after this picture was made. The USB ports are there but the power switch is now located on upper console area.

I received my USB Slim DVD drive and USB extension cable. I will post pics later with how I might be mounting this.

SlimDVD Drive

Here are the pics of the SlimDVD Drive.

Next to a Music CD to display the scale.

Sitting inside the storage bin to display scale. It can't be mounted as displayed because there is not enough clearance for the drive door to open. It will hit the ledge on the bottom of the storage bin.

The idea is to be able to close the storage bin door. I will not be using this drive on a daily basis (mainly for software installation).

I will probably use a combination of the styrofoam (which I would paint black) that came with the packaging (see pic below) and industrial velcro to mount it in the bin. It does not have to be a dramatic experience to mount this. The space is already confined, minimizing movement. I also want to eventually add a media card reader in the bin which would probably be mounted above of the drive.

I would have to drill a hole on the back of the bin for the USB cable.

With styrofoam, you have to be careful which adhesive you use. Many of them will eat the styrofoam. You'll want to try your adhesive out on some scrap before you commit. One that does work, as I remember, is contact cement.

True. I think it should be ok. I'm using the velcro that has the adhesive on the back. Either way shouldn't be dramatic to perform this task in my project.

Audio Components

I decided that before I purchase my monitor next week I am going to start on the next upgrade to my audio system.

I am replacing the rear deck stock speakers with Alpine 6x9's (SPR-69C)

For the rear passenger doors, Alpine SPR-17C 6-1/2" 2-Way 300W. Currently no speakers are in the rear passenger doors but have pockets that can be replaced by them.

Those would be the last speakers I need to complete my system. I am still researching what amp I am upgrading to.

So here is a overview of what my audio system will have regarding speakers. CaaRaaaaZyyy!!

damn thats a lot of cutting and venting... will it look ok when everythings put together?

and why would anyone want an optical drive in their car if there're holes called USB ports?:P
imo the main reason for installing a pc into a car is to get rid of the dull radios and cd-boxes...

The DVDROM will most likely not be used on a daily basis. It's for those times that may require software installation or upgrades that are from CDROMs or DVDROMs. It will not be used for music or movies because all my media are mp3's or avi's. It will make those moments more convenient.

I will be also getting rid of my head unit so that is not an issue either. I want full desktop functionality out of my PC not just for music, movies or navigation. Everyone has their own unique dream for their CarPC project.

Awesome work man!

I am planning on doing something similar to my 2003 avalanche. Except I am going to build my own center console because my center console I have currently is not doing so well. Anyways, keep up the good work man!

Thanks! I still have a few more things to do but I'm getting close to completion.

I finally decided on the amp I want. Its was so hard to decide because a lot of it depends on what kind of music you listen to and quality sound you are looking for. Every single review I read was so positive and pointed me to this Alpine displayed below. Even though all of my speakers are Alpine I was actually looking into a different make amp, possibly a JBL or something.

So this is my final decision:

Alpine PDX-4.150

Centrafuse 3.0

As many in our community, I am also excited about the release of Centrafuse 3.0. From the screenshots I'm diggin' the skin and improved features they have listed. I wonder if they improved that voice reading of email. While that was cool in Centrafuse 2.0 it was a little flawed.

Somehow I missed the bold red on this product page.
Notice:USBMA is USB passive adapter. Just only support wireless USB minicard. Can’t support PCIe minicard.

That being said I may not be able to use this after all in order to adapt my EEEPC mini pcie wifi card with my current project. The search continues. I need to verify my EEEPC atheros model on their compatibility list but I don't think it is compatible.

I am going to start working on this tomorrow morning. Not a real complex task. I originally was not going to install a DVD drive but as I stated before this will only make those times when I really do need one, more convenient. (i.e. software installations from CD/DVDROM)

The 'Ultimate' Altima Bezel

Man...I came across this thread by turbocad6 where he performed work and documented very well a custom bezel for this Ultimate screen for a Nissan Altima. I'm super jealous!!
