BMW e36 328i Sport Coupe

Status:
Just in the process of ordering kit and planning the wiring. I have the next week and a half off work and will be doing the wiring over the weekend and the beginning of the week.

I will be taking photo's as I go along to show you what is going on.

The Car

Hardware:

Up front
PC
Extras
While yes I understand that the spec is overkill for what is required at the moment... The Atom processors are quite energy efficient and will draw less wattage from the engine/battery, also the ION chipset will give me playback of HD video smoothly (most of my videos are 720p/1080p mkv's due to the setup of my living room frontend) even if I cant play them at HD resolution at the moment.... but the HD projector out of the boot wont be far behind!

There are some more custom bits that I will be doing to finish off the install (rotory control system, front & rear cameras with recording, internal camera....)

Day 1

Okay so day 1 has gone quite well... much better than I thought it would have...

I have removed the front passenger seat and the back bench..

Removed the centre console and the shift surround..

Found my cable run....

Down this run I have ran
  • 2 x USB
    2 x 3.5mm audio Jack
    1 x VGA Cable
10 x wires for the headunit
My only snagging point at the moment and am awaiting a reply from en4cer about is.... how do I EASILY remove the Stereo and CC holder as pictured below...

There seem to be 4 screws holding in, but they are on the reverse side and I dont seem to be able to get a screwdriver and and my fat fingers in there at the same time!!! lol

Just a suggestion, seeing as you are putting the screen where I have mine.

Upgrade your screen to the Linitx TMR or a transflective.

I have had lilliputs for years, but have now put in a TMR and the difference is noticeable.

Good thinking Batman! also on that note I hadnt order the screen yet anyways

A quick question on the fitment of the bezel with a non-liliput screen... any problems?

The linitx's use basically the same screens as the lilliput so fits fine.

The problem is how to fit the controller boards behind it.

On the lilliput I had before I just double sided foam taped the single lilliput board. and that worked for almost three years before it fell off, hence the reason for the upgrade.

The Linitx TMR has three seperate boards that screw onto the back of the casing, so I have trimmed the casing and hot glued it to the bracket that is in the console.

Unfortunately while fitting I allowed the screen to drop a bit and I think I have loosened the very small cable that goes between the controller board and the screen as I now have a perfect picture, but in yellow.

So I need to take it out again and reseat the cable.

hmmm... been having a look at the TMR's.. and my main problem is right now I cant afford the extra £100+ for a TMR screen....

I think I will go the route of a normal lilliput for now and upgrade after xmas if it is a major problem (im pretty sure I can flog the lilliput to someone.... theres already a lot of interest with work collegues to see what the setup is like and hints of me doing it to their cars too)

Thanks for the info tho here and also on the BMW carputers site

rdholtz is on a distinguished road
I have the USB Tiny Thumbpad Keyboard. It's good for text entry on the road, but it's lacking the keys necessary to make it a real Windows keyboard. I can't get to the BIOS with it, so I ended up going to a tiny Bluetooth keyboard. I can't tell you yet how well that works; I'm just about to install the system, so I'll do some testing soon.

I also have a little USB finger-mount trackball in case I need to click on something and the touchscreen malfunctions, but I'll have to admit that nothing like that has happened to me with the systems I've used.
