With SVEN4. Laptop audio out (miniplug rca) -> SVEN4 -> BMW-specific scoche wiring harness -> BMW amp. I think I bought the SVEN4 from cardomain.com.

I think it was this one - bought it at Best Buy because I had a gift card.
I'm glad my write up helped someone. Good luck with your install.

I use a "shutdown controller" that's wired to the laptop's docking station switch. The car's ignition is sensed by the controller, and sends a pulse to the docking station switch, which turns on the laptop.

Update - added XM direct, with cable bought from WebDog. I gave up on the headunit, since I would only do it if I could remote-mount the faceplate in the ashtray area and have the rest of the headunit in the glovebox/trunk. I tried doing this with an Alpine CDA-9855 with no luck. Decided I didn't want FM radio that badly and just got XM .
Next on the list is to add an AudioControl Overdrive line driver, new speakers, new amp, new sub, and figure out a way to put in a Parrot CK3100 bluetooth kit for my Treo650 (won't work with PhoneControl unfortunately). I'm thinking about having BavarianSoundWerks here in Atlanta do the speakers/amps, they seem to know their stuff when it comes to E46s. I sold my stock Nav/GPS equipment on eBay, and will do the same for the stock HK speakers when they come out, to pay for the new speakers/amps.
The problem I'm working on now is getting the XM radio to work from a USB port rather than serial (IBus adapter uses the serial port). Searching for a serial to USB adapter, hopefully it will allow XM to work on resume from standby/hibernate - my other USB components do, so I'm optimistic.

What shutdown controller are you using? It is for sale and how much? Thanks.

uSDC20D - I'm not selling it, but you can pick it up either directly from Jeff Mucha, or on mp3car.com store.

Since I've moved to RR (which uses WinAmp), it's got me thinking...
Given: Laptop CarPC uses Audigy card for audio, but also still has built-in laptop audio card (technically two audio cards). Planned use of Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth phone car kit. Using RoadRunner for front end, iGuidance 2.1 for navigation. Windows XP.
Problem: I want a way to mute music when nav instructions are given, and mute both music and nav when phone call comes in.
Is it possible to tell WinAmp to use the the built-in audio card, and have iGuidance use the default (Audigy)? If that were true, then would something like this work? This gadget switches the input such that source 1 is active until sound is received from source 2.
If all of the above is feasible, then music should play (via audio card 1/source 1) until nav instructions are given (via audio card 2/source 2), at which time the gadget would temporarily switch to source 2.
If all of that works correctly, then I could get another one of those switcher gadgets and have source 1 be whatever line is active from the first gadget, and source 2 would be the Parrot Bluetooth kit, which when active should trump everything else.
Anybody have any idea is this is possible?

Santa brought me a Parrot 3200, so it's going in soon:

This is a bluetooth carkit that shows a pic of the person calling. I'm using this since my Treo650 doesn't work with PhoneControl. It is also voice command capable.
One nice thing about this is that it lets you change the color of the screen, so I can make it red/amber like the rest of the dash. I'm thinking it'll go between the steering column and the LCD screen, so I should be able to see it through the steering wheel.
I ordered the PIE audio input switcher I mentioned above, so will try to make the Parrot work with it so that incoming calls will override the CarPC audio and switch to the Parrot automatically (effectively muting the music when called).
I also ordered a USB-serial adapter, so that I can try using the USB port for either my IBus steering wheel controller, or the XM radio (only have one serial port, but both devices use serial cables).

i always wonderd about the parrot, if u dont have caller id (like not paying for it per month) does it show the callers name anyway?
how are you going to hook all this up to the speakers?

It displays the phone number, just like your cell phone.
As for the Parrott user, no need to buy or install anything extra. Just wire the Parrott mute wire to a relay, and the so the relay will cut power to your radio, effectively muting everything. The advantage to that is also if you have a tape or cd in the stereo when you get a call, they stop in place. You then use the parrott wiring to feed audio to the cars speakers. The manual is not the best, but if you need some help with that, just let me know, I can help you further.
